2002 ranger xlt
this post is about my brothers and fathers explorers. My ranger is good to go knock on wood.

My brothers car: 2001 Explorer Sport 4.0 4wd auto 95,000 miles daily driver, no towing/off roading
  1. the original trans went at approx 65,000 miles. he purchased a Jasper Reman unit and i installed it in my driveway
  2. the jasper reman went jan 08 at approx 85,x.. miles. Jasper covered the repair under warranty no cost
  3. now this past week at 95,x.. miles the trans must have dropped a gear or bearing into the pan. He was driving home from work and heard a loud bang and the truck lost all gears except park. still waiting to hear if they are covering this one too.

My fathers car: 1995 Explorer XLT 4dr 4.0 4wd auto 149,000 miles daily driver, occasional boat trailering in summer months.

the original trans went at about 55,000 miles. im not 100% on his history but one time the front seal blew out. and the other times the o/d light flashes.

regardless he is on his trans has been rebuilt 4 times and the light just started flashing again!!

my 2002 Ranger has a 147,000 miles...i bought it with 124,000. No rebuilds were brought to my attention when i brought it and when i went under the truck it looks like the original casing. The trucks mileage was mainly highway which obviously helps.

Is this a problem with the earlier ford trucks? how many have you guys gone through?

At 105k miles or so, been rebuilt once.

141,000 never been rebuilt and still shifts like new. I never tow with the truck and I've been religeous about changing the fluid/filter every 30-40K.

Today's transmission is brought to us by the number, two. First one started whining at ~120k miles.

'01 Sport 4x4 ~107k miles.

Still has original trans, but it has been rebuilt several times. I have it out right now to replace some internals this weekend. Wish I could've replaced it last time instead of rebuilding it.

EDIT: Trans is a 5R55E that has lived a hard life.

Original with 155k. Syncros are not the best anymore but tranny still works fine.

Yes, M5OD.

338,000 km, and still on the first tranny,,,,,,, so far,, auto with overdrive,,,

I love my Ford truck as much as anyone here but how many blown trannies do you have to have to start saying, 'man, maybe Ford truck is just not the way to go here.' Maybe its time to venture to other trucks, be it foreign or domestic. :dunno:

I'm sorry. I'll go to my corner now.

depends on if you beat on it hard and are breaking trannies in the rough stuff or not,,

4 and now its a manual 3 auto and then converted and its the third truck its been in

I'm on my first, roughly 172,000. Shifts fine, Doesn't smell funny. I tow a small trailer regularly in the Summer. Explorers are known for the weak tranny though. At least the Earlier ones.

at more than 375k miles on our 92 we are on tran number 5. The current one has 85k miles or so on it. The current one is also a 700r4..

116k on mine, M5OD as well.

syncros are jakked in mine as well.

Numero 2 for me. got the infamous whine around 100k, rebuilt and shifts like butter now at almost 140k. Sucks it cost me $2k to fix, but it was kinda funning making ppl think i was supercharged for awhile ha. Glass is half full.....

134k, original, no problems... problems with everything else, but not with the trans

93k, original trans, knock on wood

197k on the gold one. Still original, hope to keep it that way ;). Also the white one's is the original too at 44k. :salute: Both are 1992's
