hi all, trying to work out what ENGINE oil to use in the ex,tried the search and 10w30 seems the 1 to use,but magnatec say 5w30 engine is 85000 miler, and has a little rattle on start up so not pristine lol

so do any of the uk people on here have a preferance?
Stateside very useful but they seem to have brands i have never heard of.

suggestions gratefully recieved,
thanks jay

thats very useful thanks,is there a preferance towards fully synthetic or that sort of thing?
i have no idea what it has had before no paper work came with it when i bought it.

If it were mine, there is no doubt that I would run full synthetic,

dino oil is fine if you change the oil ever 3-5k miles, if you want longer intervals then synthetic is the way to go...

synthetic is too rich for my blood, so i use dino

thanks for the feedback guys, couple of questions, would synthetic cause the engine any probs at its age if it has not had it before?

And what is dino? not a term i have heard before.
thanks jay

Oh and i think it will be more than every 3000 miles between oil changes.

Doubtful. If it is not leaking now, it will not upon the switch.

Dino oil is conventional oil.

A very good reason for synthetic oil.

great advice guys and very very helpful, that link was good will use full synth for the change, seems the best bet without any drawbacks,
thanks again for the advice and explaining the DINO lol
cheers jay (Ford driver UK)

todays oils last a lot longer than oils of yesteryear....

i go about 5-6k in my conventional oil and my truck has over 210k on it

thanks howard, have never tried mobil, and the supra people dont seem to reckon magnatec,so i will give it a try will probably put a dose of slick50 in aswell while im at it dont think that will hurt

Use Mobil 1

I always use Mobil One and change over any car I have- including the Explorer-, with unknown histories, to Mobil 1 when I get them. Never any problems. I also flushed the engine and added some super magnets (off of e-bay) to the oil filter can in the Ex, to keep any metal filings under control. Paranoid or what?

Given the timing chain problems the anti wear technology in Mobil 1 has to be an additional benefit.

This time round, reading that STP has silenced chain noise in Ex's, I added a can of it. I guess when cold, it congeals on the vital parts. That said, I don't have any timing chain noise (at 70k) but it may be a preventative. However it may reduce the Mobil 1 benefit and you can bet Mobil would not recommend it.

I would just use a good brand of 10w30 and change it every 2-3,000 miles....I try to keep mine changed as close to 2,000 as possible. :)

{my 1994 Ex. Limited only has 85,000 miles on it :)}
