what? dude thats bad. but i'll take a shot 2200-2500 rpms at 65 with 3.27 gears so i would say you are minus a gear yes. Check your fluid and make sure it is at the right level

Well, I would say the fluid would be the first thing to check. Other then that it's probably going to require pulling the Tranny apart. but, You could also check all the wires going to the Tranny and their Connectors. Also, Any cables that may be connected.

Do you have Overdrive turned off? I'm not familiar with the Gen 1 transmission, but in my Gen II, (1995) it sounds like that's what my truck would be doing if the truck has not shifted into overdrive. O/D is either off or not functioning would be my guess.

In my stock 1995, I am at about 1,600-ish (guessing) at 65 MPH when in overdrive.

I don't know about an Auto trans, but my 4.0L will be cruising comfortably at 65mph at 2500RPM in 5th...hope it isn't a spendy prob to fix yours.

When driving at a lower speed around 45-55 drop it from OD to D and see if it down shifts. If it does not you have lost OD and need to be getting ready to get a new tranny

I already tested it and on my 1992 explorer 4.0 OHV A4LD transmission i get 1600 RPM at 65 mph. I am geared on the 3.27! 2000rpm is on the D but 1600 rpm is on the OD.Yes at first even in the OD the engine will rev at around 2000 rpm because the engine must overcome the torque needed to accelerate with the 3.27 but somewhere in the 60-65 mph it should go back to 1600 rpm. Make a test go at 65 mph with steady pedal position when you see it wont downshift after a couple of minutes then just give a little "kick" on the gas pedal..it should now go back to 1600rpm.
I had this problem and ill tell you how to correct it..... Change the oil and filter of the tranny but replace 750ml of tranny oil by the 750ml bottle of Lucas automatic transmission high temperature treatment. it cost around 15$ and it is as thick as Bardhal. Put it first it will take time to empty the bottle dont worry it is so thick....after that to be sure theres no Lucas remaining in the filler tube put the normal tranny oil in it. But dont remember to put 750ml less of tranny oil ...it would be overfilled and overheat. I made this and my tranny stopped giving hard shift , flow better and shift really better.

Additives basically just mask the problem just like putting fix-a-flat in your tire, it stops the leak but the nail's still in there.

If the fluid is the problem its sure that it is good to put an additive in the new fluid. If its mroe than fluid....anyway it will break someday so the extra 15$ will give you a delay to get another tranny or get cash to repair the one you have.

I tried additives once. made my problem worse. carefull what you pour in you ride.

Tethy, did you do that during the Summer?

It depends what company you buy additives...but Lucas is really known for good quality...stic kto company like that for additives.

Yea i'd use them as a last resource before getting a new tranny I used the lucus oil in my old A4LD and fix the blown head gasket with some liquid "head gasket repair" and it worked until I got a new engine and tranny.

used some head gasket fixer. It plugged all my water holes in the engine and caused the heads to overheat and warp. Was not fun and I will never use stuff like that agin... yes it was late summer.

I only used it because I was planning on replacing the entire engine.

92greenexplorer did changing the fluid help at all?
