I am starting to look at Explorers and would appreciate any recommendations any of you could make. I am thinking a low-mileage 2006 model would meet my needs - I currently have a 2000 lb pop-up camper and would carry my wife, 3 teenage kids, and dog along with a "ton" of gear and want 4WD for winter driving. I know the higher ratio rearends are better for towing, but how much do they knock gas mileage down? Is the 8 cylinder engine more/less reliable than the 6? Would there be a reason to pick one year over another, or one package over another? Thanks in advance for your help.

If we round up to about 3k pounds being carried including your gear, the V6 is able to handle that. The V8 can obviously tow more but if you rarely go over 3500 lbs then the V6 should suit your needs in regard to towing capability. The lower gear ratios (higher numerically) aren't necessarily better for towing in general, but better for getting the load moving because it will generate the torque sooner in the power band (someone correct me if thats wrong).

As for the difference in gas mileage, its between 1 and 2 mpg so almost negligible which might make the V8 a more attractive option for when you aren't towing, the extra power is nice.

I can't comment on reliability but to maximize the life of your truck when towing be sure to add an extra transmission cooler and temp gauge so you can watch for overheating. Also, adding a class III hitch is recommended for frequent towing.
