What should i do about A4LD rebuild or leave alone

Ok heres the deal, blew up my motor about a 3 weeks ago. I am currently enrolled at University of Northwestern Ohio in the High Performance Technology program. I am 4 weeks into Auto trannies and since i have my motor out and the last 2 weeks are open shop i am thinkin of rebuildin my A4LD. It has 158,000 on it and never skipped a beat. It Hasn't been maintained as well as i would like but sometimes thats the way it goes. I was thinkin of rebuilding it with new converter and a shift kit. My question is is this foolish and i should leave it the hell alone? I have the motor out because on the way back to school from home i burned a big hole in #1 piston and cracked the head.... no warning nothing just bam and that was all she wrote. My engine should be here by Fri, and open shop started today so i can have the trans out of the truck in the morn in time for class tomorrow night. Last thing i want to do is get this engine in and have the trans dump on me 2 months down the road and have to attempt to rebuild by myself.... at least in class i have a pro right there to ask questions and all.

What would you do ?

The only things you need to do

are the following:

1. Retorque the valve body bolts. These loosen up over time as the gasket ages.

2. Replace the low/reverse O ring with the updated double lip seal. These all leak in the A4LD and replacing this will save the reverse band.

3. Replace the vacuum modulator. It's old, cheap ($12) and a lot easier to get out now.

4. Replace the screen filter which picks up nothing with the newer MicroFelt type. With new fluid a lot of gunk will come out of the TC and other remote places. It is very likely that you will need to drop the pan in another six months and replace the filter again. It will get dirty quickly. Add some magnets to the pan. They did this in later transmisions.

It is a personal choice if you want to do a rebuild for grins. If the transmission works there is not much to be gained. You already have too much activity going on and chances are you'll rush it and put a seal in backwards. Now that all the bolts are loose you will have no problem dropping it if there is a problem in the future. This is an easy transmission to work on. All you need is patience. Putting a shift kit in without a total rebuild is asking for trouble.

yea i was thnkin complete rebuild not just shift kit but i think it would be cutting it too close. i guess i will just put the motor in when it gets here and pray for the best.
