i was under my explorer earlier today changing the fluid in the rear axle and noticed a third shock what the hell is that for. just axtra dampining or something else?

Yep, that's what it is. Some say it's useless and some say it serves a purpose that's why it's there.

being in the spot and the angle in which it operates it can't possibly help unless it's really tight.

The 3rd shock is useless, I removed mine with no ill effects.
