Oil in TB, WHAT THE HELL???

I re-oiled the K&N, cleaned the MAF, and thought I would take a look at the TB which has a sticker on it that says specially coated. I swabbed my finger inside to try and feel the coating and look whats in there!!! I got a maglight and the whole upper intake plenum is coated with this sludge crap that sort of smells like oil. I'm not losing any oil and the engine has a little over 87,000 miles and runs great. I made an appointment at my Ford dealer to have this checked out. Anyone know what could cause this? Is it normal? Thanks, Chris

I forgot to mention that the air intake hose is clean so I don't think it is blow by from the air tube that goes to the oil cap.

I remember seeing someone spray their TB and plenum out with carb cleaner and a bunch of crap like that came running back out.

I'm pretty sure that it is deposited by the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. I think its normal to have a certain amount of this stuff build up. That is why Ford put the coating on the inside of the TB, to minimize the amount of deposits at the TB plate, where they can cause problems (sticking, rough idling, etc)

Hmmm..........you have now entered your finger print on file!!:D

Just wipe it out, it is normal.

thats what cleaners are for.

Thats why you clean your Throttle Body every 10-12k miles. Its normal.

Get some throttle body cleaner and clean it- check the labeling of the cleaner it should say safe for coatings on it. There are many threads on the site about cleaning- just get some cleaner a tooth brush and have at it.

Good Luck.

Can't the K&N deposit that oil if you don't do it correctly?

whats the best stuff to use to clean the throttle body?

I think all of this crap in the plenum is from the EGR. Before fuel injection the air/fuel mixture from the carburetor would keep the inside of the manifold walls clean by scrubbing it as the fuel goes to the cylinder. But with port fuel injection the only thing inside of the manifold/plenum now is just air....nothing to "wash" the walls with. So the exhaust and PVC blowby just accumulate.

Well I have the dirt and I dont have an EGR system.

It is the air resonating in the plenum runners though - as the valves open and shut the air stops reverses and mixes with exhaust a little. Deposits stuff on the walls and throttle plate.

I cleaned the stuff out with STP throttle body and intake cleaner. I don't know if I removed the coating but everything is clean now.

It is important not to use excessive amounts of oil on the K & N. Excessive oil will foul up your MAF. This is what the dealers are up in arms about right now. They even have a bullitan out about it. A light coating is all you need. Let it set up overnight before you install it.

He has a 97, so it is all electronic with no vacuum modulator. But this is a good tip for 91-94 A4LD transmissions.
