Hey all, I'm kinda new to the explorer and had a few questions about it. I purchased one last month and it has 120k on it. It's a 97 awd with the 5.0. My question is this: What general maintenance should I do to it. I mean, beyond the coolant flush, oil, tranny fluid. I need to know things like engine components, or wheel bearings maybe, etc. Thanks for your help!!

Nice choice X and welcome to the site!

Here's a few things I would do/check

Air Filter
Clean MAF
Plugs
Wires
Check/Clean IAC
Fuel Filter
Check the brake fluid
Service the tranny
Radiator
Brake pads

Hmmm.. thats about all I can think of now. Post some pics of your ride if you can. What do you plan on doing to it mod wide? Anything?

As far as mods, I put on a KKM air filter, and am looking into at least a flowmaster muffler, but would like to get some engine upgrades as well. I'm not sure where to start, though!!

1)What does that mean? The member said he has a KKM. Why is it "lol"? And who brought up KNN?
2)"cold air intake" is a 2ner marketing scheme, there is no such thing (unless someone sticks a DX coil in there:rolleyes: )

Welcome Aboard ithrowgirls (need to know what that means)!!!:D

I disagree with that. Cold air intake means you're taking air from outside of the engine compartment. This definately will increase HP over a system that draws air from under the hood. Most cars come this way from the factory, but the factory systems are marginal when you modify the engine to the point that it requires more air flow. At that point the stock system needs to be replaced with a cold air intake which can flow a higher volume of air.

So rick, would you reccomend the Volant CAI kit over the KKM kit?

I understand that a true cold air intake system would pull air from outside instead of under the engine. I know of no kit that is available for Explorers that pulls cold air and increases flow. All increased flow kits I have seen pull from under the hood. Is there such a kit?

I still like the DX coil idea!:D I may have to make that a kit and throw it on eBay.;)
