My first post here and wanting to buy my first Ford ST. I test drove one and am hooked. I am looking at a 2008 XLT 4 x 4 with 56,000 miles. V6/4.0 Its from a dealer and was from a one time owner. Very clean and in excellent condition. It does not have alot of upgrades on it but does have what I want like the tonneau cover, keyless entry, roof racks running boards and such, It has cloth seats which I am not crazy about but my area is pretty limited here in the midwest. I was thinking about offering $19,000 but not sure if that is to low from the dealers asking price of $21,750. Would like anyones thoughts and advice, Thank you.

eh, in Oct. 2010 I bought my 2007 XLT V8 4x4 w/ 23k miles for $21,000. I would offer much less than that for yours, esp because dealers are trying to get rid of gas guzzling vehicles, and the ST doesn't get the best gas mileage.

btw just a quick jump on Carmax (where I bought mine, it came from Arizona and I had it shipped to GA through Carmax), i found 4 around what your looking at, 2 below $19k....
http://www.carmax.com/enus/search-results/default.html?AWc=1&ANi=0&AsP=NA-22000&N=4294966965+4294966538&D=90&zip=30458&sM=NA-50000&sY=2007-2012&pD=0&pI=0&pT=400&pC=200&pB=0&No=0&Ep=homepage:homepage%20MultiChoice&Rp=R&PP=20&sV=List&CD=14+966+240+398+9&Q=93bd6886-a188-425f-b3a6-75af531fee25

and one of them was a V8 w/ 31k miles for a $1,000 less than your local dealership

Get a V8!! :smoke:

That price does seem a bit high IMHO.

I bought a 2007 Limited V8 last year with 27K miles for $21,000. It is not a 4x4, but was loaded to the max. That one sounds a little high to me. I would look around a bit....unless this one it the one for you....if that is the case then make an offer and go for it.

go low! im not sure what other similar trucks are going for in your area, but if you can live with getting it for 19k, offer 17,500 for it and haggle from there. im a notorious haggler, and rule #1 when negotiating the price of a vehicle is that the dealer needs to move that car much more than you need to buy it.if the dealer knows that you know that you can get a truck anywhere, from amillion different dealers, you got him. try to get it out of him as to how long theyve had the truck. the longer he's had it, the more leverage you have. oh yeah, always find a good balance in price. the best deal that can be made is the one where both sides walk away happy. good luck!

Thank you for your guys help. I did look at the ones on carmax that GSU4x4 posted and those are all 2WD and I am looking at a 4WD. I quess I should of named my post "How to Haggle" as I have never done that before and as a female its kind of intimidating which I am sure the salemen like. Regarding the V6 vs V8 I dont think I need alot of power but am considering a V8 now on my search. Again thanks!

I'm actually in the market to buy another vehicle right now too, I'm looking for a small affordable car to help save on gas since my 4x4 V8 likes to drink!

From what I've found out so far in trying to buy a vehicle from a haggle dealership (Carmax is no haggle price) is that you always want to get the price of the vehicle as low as they can go. Bring up comparisons you've found online and show them that you can get a better deal if you drive a little farther away. They are going to try and get your payments where you want them, but tell them the payments don't matter, you want the lowest price then you'll determine the payments. Because they will adjust the price of the vehicle to make it within your requested monthly payment, that includes raising the price of the car some...a dealer just tried to do that to me last weekend.

Also an important idea is to buy at the end of the month, go shopping on the second to last day of the month, if you really want it then get a credit check and pretty much be ready to buy, then tell them you want to think about it. Then on the last day of the month call them and tell them you think you've changed your mind and ask whats the lowest they can do. They will be hungry at this point because dealers want to sell as many cars before the month rolls over (not sure why). I bet they'll come down alittle more on the last day and then go pick up you're new ST!

Hope that helps ya

one more thing, if you havent already, dont let them know how you plan to pay for the vehicle. they will always try to figure out if you are financing, how much you want to put down, if you have a trade in, all that. when they ask you tell them "i dont know." once they know how you plan to pay for it, they will let the guy in the little box know and thats where the squeeze starts. this is how they figure out how much they can squeeze you for.

good luck!

Keep in mind- at $20k, they probably paid $15k for it on trade... If anything needs to be done, touched up, fixed, etc... There is money to play with. They want to sell it, so make it a fair deal- for both of you. Sometimes they'll make deals on accessories too- if you're going to add things later, see if they will throw it in on the deal.

As far as the V8, the issue isn't so much the power, (well, a little bit) but the beefiness of the driveline, and the virtually non-existent difference in the gas mileage.

I bought my 08 4x4 with 17k miles for $22k last October.

I did it and I bought me a Sport Trac!!!!! I bought a 2008 V8 4x4. So happy I went with the V8. I did my first haggling and did very well . I am so happy! Thank you all for your advice and hopefully I can post a picture of it next week.

Nice!!! I'm glad you got the V8. Cant wait for pics!! :)

Sweet and congrats!!

Well done!
