I have a class III hidden hitch on my 2000 v8 explorer, came with the truck when I bought it but it doesnt have the tongue (not sure exactly what its called) and its missing the ball aswell.

My question is, what size drop tongue do I need? I seen ones that come out of the hitch and go down and some go up.... which one is it that I need?
I plan on towing a car hauler trailer

Most likely you will need a 2" ball (check the coupler on the trailer to be sure it will be stamped into the top of the coupler) on a Ball mount. you should not need a drop mount the standard mount is all you should need

yes that is the one typically installed as shown but can be flipped over to raise the ball if needed to level trailer just check the coupler on the trailer to be sure that it uses a 2" ball

really? cool thanks!

yup, 2 inch ball for the trailer

They call those "dropped" tongues or "goosenecks".

They can be raised or lowered.
(obviously by keeping it standard, or flipping it around)

I have a 5 1/2 inch reversed gooseneck on my mounty, because my aftermarket hitch sits so low, I had no choice but to buy the biggest tongue drop I could find at wal-mart, and just flip it upside down to equal everything out.

it works perfect, I've towed 4k with it, rough driving, never had any problems.
