1998 Ford Explorer XLT
Hey...I am Scott. I have had a 2002 Explorer for several years and it has been great. My son turned 16 and wanted it, so I sold it to him. I bought a 1998 Explorer and have run into several problems. One I did not see when I searched the site. When I put the car in reverse and start backing up, every now and then, it makes a popping sound. When I first heard it I thought I had run over something, but alas, nothing in the parking lot. It only does it every now and then and it is after I start backing up. Anyone else ever have this problem? I joined to get advice and am not very mechanically inclined, so PLEASE, keep it simple or I will have no idea what you are talking about. **Day 40 of over 100 degree temps and counting...Someone send some cooler weather to Texas please

What engine in your '98, and what drivetrain?

4 wheel drive 4.0 V-6

Welcome,
My first thought would be a bad cv axle joint.

PS. I know the weather you are talking about. I was born in Arlington, TX and grew up in Grand Prairie.

Thanks.....I am in Arlington, Texas

Yep- check the CV's and driveshafts. Climb under and wiggle the driveshafts/u-joints- any discernible movement or looseness felt is a problem.
