I'm thinking about getting rid of my 00 for something a lil older. Just toying with the idea, I've found some nice Eddies and Limiteds within my price range so I'm wondering what was the differences between 96-01. No matter how minor. I also love knowing stuff like this so even if I keep it, it'd be nice to know anyways. Like is a 4.0 ohv 96 the same as my 00 ohv 4.0 ? Reason I ask is because Ive found a 96 eddie v6 which I'm assuming is the 4.0 OHV

The only real difference is the rear hatch/bumper and the front bumper. A few electronics and options are diffeent too.

What about engine wise? What was the first year the SOHC was offered, 97? V8 avail. for all 2nd gens.

well for the limiteds/EBs

95s had first gen roof racks, the limiteds also had first gen limited rims, the early 95 limiteds/EBs had a very weird ugly electronic HVAC.

96s limiteds had different wheels,roof racks,colors.the 5.0 V8 became a option on later 96s.

97s the tan interior color was changed to a lighter tan, they got alittle different t-case setup with no 2wd slection, 97-up got cheaper carpet then 95-96 limiteds, the sohc 4.0 became a option.

98s the EB/limiteds got the steering wheels with radio controls, new hatch/rear bumper new taillights, different color dash lights, different colors offerd

99s heated seats became a option, radio benzel became wood grain on limiteds, new 16" limited wheels, fender flaires on limited, EBs dident have the doors painted tan like older Xs. wood grain on the door panals in the limiteds,99s got new front bumpers and fog lights.

from 99-01 not alot changed..just a few little things

there i think thats about it..i love my 96' limited has a very timeless look to it that only the 95-98 limiteds have IMO.

BTW for the most part...not much changed in the 4.0 ohv from 91-01 if anything did it was pretty minor.

4 wheel drive 96 and below 2nd gens had the vacuum axle disconnects on the front where as 97s and higher 2nd gens did not have them.

I found the seating position different between my 97 and my 99 - though that would have meant some major changes to a run out model so it may just be in my mind.

Power was up slightly, radio ariel changed from whip to retractable, alloy wheels (but we have 16" - 255/70 16 as standard over here), changes to body work color-ways, rear tailgate.

Not much really but large car makers are very good at making cheap and minor improvements make previous models feel very old!

keep 'em coming if there is anything else, I didn't know the V8 was offered in 96, I guess because it was later on

Try to get the SOHC V6, or the V8. With the cam repairs, the SOHC is almost a match for the V8. The V8(and its trans) may be more reliable, depending on how it was cared for.

Note that 95-98 had air shocks on high option models, and 99-01 had rear air shocks as options. The cost of repairs could be high, so make sure that you want those, and that they work. Good luck,
Don

Thanks for the tip but I've decided to keep mine, the miles were low when I bought it and I know how it was treated. So if need be, i'll refiance my loan, besides I wouldn't mind making my XLS into a Limited
