I seem to be having some kind of drive line bind I can't pinpoint. I don't drive it often, it's the wife's.
But when I get in to drive it, it's pretty obvious there is something not right in the drive line. It takes way too much pedal to get it to go, and it down shifts on even the slightest incline. And the gas mileage is killing me, highest we've got lately was 15.8 mpg all highway.

So, I was thinking of pulling the front drive shaft out.

What will this do to the 4wd system? I mean, will it fry the clutch in the tcase? I'm not worried if some 4x4 lights flash, and I have absolutly no need for 4wd around here.
This probably won't be a permanent repair, but I have nowhere to work on vehicles in my current situation, and even less time to do it in.. It's been to the dealer for a diagnostic on this and of course "no problems found, unable to duplicate". Something is definetley not right, however.

Before you do that, is it possible to make an even trade for a 2wd? You could probably find a trade along I80 or Hwy50. Is your vehicle paid off?

Not paid off.

Normally I would fix it, but we're APT living right now and as such, not allowed to work on junk here.. It's killing me. Thats the reason behind the band-aid solution.

For now all I'm really worried about is doing more damage than help by dropping the front shaft. Not really sure how the clutch system works in there beyond the basics. I'm a levers and gears kinda guy.

I see... I'm hoping you can find a trade. But if not, hopefully your questions can be answered. Good luck... (and check with the automalls, they might have something for you).

I would check the fluid level in the transfer case. I had a 97 with funky problems when it was just a few years old and that was traced to a rear seal leak and low fluid on the clutches. There was no sign of leaking either.
