Ok, lets say that your pops told you that you had $3,000 to build a new 302 for your Explorer. It has to be naturally aspirated and NOS is out of the question. In detail, what would you do. What would you put on the engine. What makes the most ponies. If possible, staying away from boring it out, what kind of horsepower could you get.

I NEED HELP, I AM BUILDING A 302 WITH THE OLD MAN AND I AM LOOKING TO GET INTO THE 300+ HP RANGE. WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO DO SO?

I am talkin startin from scratch. What kind of hp could i get by using more performance oriented parts instead of factory heads, manifolds, intake, cam, rollers, etc.

I'd start with a 4 bolt 302 block, stroke it and use a set of modified 351 heads on it, roller rockers and roller lifters, fuel injection.......

My Idea

I would find a newer roller cam block. 10-1 pistons, balance and blueprint with at least a .030 bore. should be like 307-308 cubes. Cam depends on you torque/ RPM range. Pretty much any after market aluminum head. Edelbrock I think gives best bang for the buck. Card CFM will differ with altitude, I like vacuum secondary carbs. I live at 7,000 ft so small is better over hear. 300 horses is pretty easy if you take your time and plan it out. I would suggest buying Desk Top Dyno first to play around with combo's, You'll be amazed.

Ok, here's the deal. I think i am going to get a used 302 block, depending on the shape of it, it might be bored .030 over to a 306. then i plan on putting a 347 storker kit on it. That will add some ponies. I plan on a bigger cam, rollers and lifter, 10:1 pistons, intake, and all that good stuff. I have talked to my pops and he seems to be agreeing. I just hope it all goes through. I have a friend who has been building engines since he was five is lookin for a block and some other stuff for me as we speak. I think this might actually go into production. SWEEEEEEET!!!!

All other things being equal you've gotta go with fuel injection. You can get a mustang intake cheap and the reliability and performance benefits far outweigh the small additional costs and hassle.
