I've been poking around and am wondering what year long blocks will work in my truck (2004 4-door). I would like to think that the earlier 4.0L SOHC motors from the 95 and up explorer/sport tracs should fit with the swapping of intake and exhaust manifolds.. (sensors/injectors/etc)

I have a motor out of a sport trac in my garage, and it looks pretty damn close to the motor in my truck. (minus the accessories)

I did the chains/complete gasket kit (HG and all) a few years ago, but it still has a mystery coolant leak, (internal), and the rear guide broke. I pulled the motor and swapped a guide from the other motor, and put it back in until I find another motor.

I'm really tempted to do a 4.6 or even the 5.4 swap, but I think I'll opt for the 4.0L if I can get one cheap enough. Maybe if I get a solid enough motor, I can finally get this one turboed as well. :)

Thanks,

If you are to swap a SOHC into a '94 then you may as well swap a 4.6L or a 5.0L..... either way you are looking at swapping the entire harness, and transmission. The nice part about swapping into an explorer (any year) is that there is room... I have an 1989 BroncoII and many people have swapped 4.0L OHV & 4.0L SOHC, 4.6L & 5.0L, there is plenty o room! just gotta grab the harness and fuel pump :-)

I have a '96 4.6 Mustang GT engine in my 2002 Explorer.

This is for my 04 4-door. I'm sure any of the 4.0L SOHC's will bolt up to my truck, but I'm curious if there are any differences?

Thanks,

SOHC differences

There are a few differences based on 2WD (no balance shaft) and 4WD (balance shaft) and make. The 2005+ Mustang SOHC V6 has no crankcase breather like your 2004 Explorer probably has. Also, there's a difference in the fuel injector mounting. Here's a thread that describes installing a Mustang SOHC V6 into a 98 Explorer: Engine swap 98 sohc with 05 Mustang motor
