I am planning on putting a mustang H.O cam in with some 1.7 roller rockers. Anybody try this before, if so how does it work? I was going to go with the e303 but the guy told me that with an automatic the take off will be horrible unless I install a higher stall converter. So any opinions?

dont bother with the stock 'stang cam. its not worth the effort. you WILL NOT need a stall for an Ecam, an Ecam is small. it may have a little bit less torque off-idle but will more than make up for it once the tach gets to about 1700. there are several guys here running an Ecam. whoever you talked too must not have misunderstood something. an Ecam is small and works fine in an otherwise stock X.:)

edit, use 1.6's instead of 1.7's. all the 1.7's will do is shift your powerband farther up the rpm range without really making any more power.

I'm curious if the guys running ecams are standard or automatic. The guy who told me is probably the best mustang guy in North America and he said that he won't use an ecam in a stock mustang with an automatic. So he figured the explorer would be much the same. I would like to decide on this by next week so all input is appreciated.

there are no 5 liter explorer's with manuals.... all are auto's. are you sure he isnt refering to an Ecam with 1.7's? because that would be (slightly) crappy off-line. also, he's thinking of mustangs which had 3:23 gears stock. just about all V8 X's have 3:73's and even a few have 4:10's. also, the explorer V8's have a 4R70W tranny, which has a lower 1st gear than the mustang AOD. trust me, the Ecam is not that big with 1.6's. if you dont believe me, pm a member here by the name of expo5.0. he has one in his. the loss of torque off-idle is only small, and once you start getting close to 2k rpms the extra power more than makes up for it.

as i said, i would personally not spend the $$$ on a cam swap only to get a stock 'stang cam. all that time down and all that effort/$$$ for install and you'll only get about 10hp(maybe) over the explo cam.

Thanks for the info, I will definately tell him about that. Would you happen to know what kind of HP gain I can expect with an ecan and 1.6s

ford has a crate motor that is basically an explorer motor with an Ecam. it has stock GT-40p heads, stock motor, just an Ecam. it is rated at 270hp. i would say just under that.
