Hey everyone. I just bought a new(to me) sport trac and am getting ready to get rid of my 99 explorer sport. I was planning to just bring it to the junk yard but a friend said they wanted it. I told him to give me scrap value for it, but he countered insisting he give me 1000 for it which I think is way too much. Truck has 222K miles, rocker panels are rusted, needs a lower ball joint, needs a wheel hub, multiple cluster bulbs are out, 4wd acts up sometimes, rear leafs are sagging. I think it doesnt make sense to expect anything more than what theyd offer for the thing in compacted tin can price but my friend whole heartedly disagrees. Who is the crazy one in this situation?

You are if you don't sell it to him for $1k. The way I always seen it is: If its not total junk and it runs and drives down the road it's worth $1k. Junkyard you get almost half that so...

The general rule is if it runs its worth a grand. But I wouldn't touch it for anymore than $500

my rule is to never sell cars to friends and family, but like has been said, if it runs and goes down the road a $1000 is probably about right. Just tell him everything that's wrong with it.

If you were going to scrap it anyways, just pay it forward and give it to him. 500 doesn't buy much today as it is

I paid $500 for my EB from a friend a few months ago, and have dropped 1200 more in fixing it.

Is he mechanically inclined? If so, counter offer meeting him halfway between scrap value and $1000. If not mechanically inclined then I'd go with Koda's rule, never sell cars to friends and family.
