The original question

Well everything in this thread is entertaining, but I dont think the question was really answered- or at least I missed it in all of the V-8 BS.

Basically: What is the best engine to get in the 91-94 explorer. The ONLY engine is the 4.0 OHV V-6 so the engine choice is made. Is one year better than another - well maybe. The power was basically the same for all years at 155 or 160hp- I havent found any reason other than measurment or advertising- cams seem to be the same, could be tuning. I would look to the later 93.5 to 94 years for updated head, and the trans mods in 94 for the auto. The 93-94 FI system went sequential, plus they have EGR and some other more advanced Smog stuff.
So of the early model explorers a 93-94 might be a better choice than the 91-92 - but the choice isnt dramatic and with a vehicle this old you can update and improve as repairs (which will be needed) are made to a 91-92. I would think general conditon would be a better qualification than engine in a vehicle that is ten plus years old, and will have 100k miles on it.

Good Luck

Remember, don't just get a picture of a v8 in an explorer. ( I have a computer full of 91-94 Explorer V8 conversion pics) If you plan on taking pictures..... We need to see the motor mounts, exhaust, and TRANSMISSION. A picture of these items will surely tell us what it really is..... ie: a 4.0L V6, a stock v8, or a CONVERSION V8.

Thanks,
Al

Thanks SteveVB for the helpful info.:D

i have to say that i think the 5.0 v8 is a very good engine.. my 98 has been (knock on wood) the greatest engine ive had. its great for towing, good for passing and fun to haul ass in. besides that i also has somewhat of a heritage being associated with the 5.0 mustangs and thunderbirds. but dont get me wrong i loved my old 93 explorer 4.0 but it has nowhere near the balls of the v8 but stil la dependable engine. always worked when i needed it and it never broke down. however i think the sohc v6 is a piece of sh@t. my dad has it in his 99 limited and although i think it gets good gas mileage i dont think that it is quality. Its been in for the cam chain tensioner like three times and it still doesnt sound right.. oh well. just my thoughts

So guys..... no pictures of these GEN 1 V8 explorers?

I was really looking forward to seeing this thing.
Whats the report Fischer ??

Thanks,
Al

No factory V-8's in 1st Gen X's

I've worked at Ford (in Dearborn) for over thirty years. Believe me, if they had built a V-8 Explorer before 1996, I would know about it. There AREN'T any.

ok....this v-8 in the first gen is starting to intrigue me....i have to admit im a little skepticle....BUT....one of my friends in high school back in the day had a new 94....and also said it had a v8....now it had leather and all the EB crap but didnt have the EB badgeing or v8 badges.....at the time i blew it off and said yea right they couldnt fit it in there...but now im wondering:confused:

i am now kicking my self for not looking at the engine at the time...oh well

we will anxiously await the pictures:D

sounds like your high school friend had a brand new 1996 XLT explorer with leather interior. V8's only came in 1996+ explorers. If it didn't have the eddie bauer badging, that means it's an XLT. XLT's can still be loaded inside.

im not accepting the idea yet but when i say it was a 94....it was a 94....that was the whole point of the story

dont get so defensive....im just waiting for pics of the so-called 94 w/ a factory v8

Well..... Since nobody can come up with a picture of this mysterious Generation 1 V8 Explorer, I took it upon myself to find one. Take this all you NON-BELIEVERS!!!

ok..... I began my search in the Phoenix Arizona Metro Area. All day I searched and searched to no avail. I had given up hope. But, as I was driving home all depressed from not finding a gen 1 V8 X, out of the corner of my eye I saw somthing interesting...... Could it be? YES!!!!!!! it was a Generation one V8 Explorer.

Here are the pictures........and the real proof that a GEN 1 V8 Explorer does exist. I believe this to be a 1991-1994 model.
v8logo1.jpg

You can see the V8 logo on the Fender panel near the door. This is obviously STOCK. looks like it has the eddie Bauer Delete paint on the wheel fender wells.

Well, I said to myself....... "What does a stupid logo prove?" So, I got a hammer, checked to see if anybody was looking, and smashed the window in on this explorer.

I then proceeded to open the hood latch to see what this explorer really had to prove.
Dead Link Removed
And here it is!! PROOF.... the Gen 1 V8 Explorer exists!

Hope this helps everybody in their quest for the truth.
Good Luck,
Al

What about the motor mounts? Where's those pics?!

asp is just being a smart ass.....thats his car i think....lol...ok...still waiting for real pics fischer:rolleyes:

Section 525..... I don't make a habit of breaking in to cars...... I only had a short amount of time before the cops showed up to take pictures. (sorry about not taking motor mount pictures, but thats a good idea)

Ford Krazy!!!! How dare you publically call me a smart ass! I broke in to this explorer to prove "your point!" that GEN 1 V8 Explorers really do exist! Don't be getting mad at me. No one else can come up with pictures. I put an end to all of this "FRIEND OF A FRIEND told me he had a V8 in his GEN 1 explorer."
Now we know the truth. It's alive.

Al
