A couple of weeks ago, I had my transmission worked on and they replaced the EPC solenoid (I'm not sure what that does) and cleared the codes. On the next tank of gas, I calculated my mileage to be about 24.5. I figured it was a fluke. But, I just filled up again, and I got just over 26 on this tank! Keep in mind I have the AWD 4.0 SOHC. This has been on mixed highway and city driving.

I got my fuel from different gas stations, so calibration of the pump was eliminated as a possible cause. My question is, what is causing my mileage to be so good right now? Should I expect it to drop off soon?

I'd advise to just enjoy it and not ask questions :)

EDIT: Damn you Mike :p

Don't worry about it, just go with it!! I'd die for 24/26 mpg. But I'm happy with 18-20 :p

O yea, watch out Aldive, looks like you have some competition!!

I wonder if your speedometer/odometer is calibrated correctly?

Man, you suck! Don't complain about it. Mine gets about 11 mpg in the city and I DON'T have a lead foot. The tech has not gone past 3000rpm either so I pretty much drove like a grandpa. I really don't know why.

Ehm, Ford didn't make an AWD Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC in 1998.

You either got a 4x4 4.0 SOHC, or if you have AWD it's the 5.0 V8.

Now you've just JINX yourself. Wait until you get your next fill up- it'll be around 15. :p

:knock on wood:

BradE, I guess you're technically right, but I have the auto 4x4, which I have been told is an AWD for all practical purposes.

You were told wrong. Ford's 4x4 system, even in "Auto" mode, is not like AWD. In Auto, the majority( it's over 80% IIRC) of the power goes to the rear wheels, not evenly split like AWD.

awd 4x4 who cares 25 MPG WOOO HOOO, that's sweet man.

Yup, I'd guess since they mucked with the tranny your speedo and odo are off. But if they're not, :chug:

Check your odo against GPS or highway mileage markers.
