Whats with these different SOHC engine Cover's

The oil cap is on the other side too... in the same place the OHV's oil cap is. I think that's an OHV with the wrong letters on the plastic cover. That plastic cover doesnt look the same anyways.

This is an '01 right? Where did you get it from (dealer or private)?

I got it froma Ford and they stopped putting the OHV in them in 2001. Plus my friend Kevin he is a Mechanic at Ford looked at the motor and assures me its a SOHC. The plastic cover says SOHC not OHV even though its the same shape. I'm not sure whats going on with this thing its weird.

Nope, my 2002 has the one like johnny, and my uncle's 2001 sport is the same way. Ive wondered this same thing myself and can't think of anything

If you look close enough

You will see that there is a cover on first two. However there is a difference in the intake air plenum. They are totally different. It almost looks like second one is 3rd Gen X maybe. Not sure. I do know there is a huge difference between Mom's 2002 Gen 3 4.0 SOHC intake air plenum and my Gen 2 2000 4.0 SOHC.

Both of these are definitely V6 SOHC engines. There is a change in the intake midway through 2001. The early style is referred to as "job 1" and the later style is "job 2". This is a common designation with the Sport Trac folks.

This is true and i have seen a 2003 Ranger a friend of mine owns and it has my upper intake. Whats with the other one that BlackMagic has is it better or something it kinda looks like it has more tube to go through before going into the motor. Mine seems like more direct into it ya know.

It could be like the very first Explorer's had OHV 4.0's and they looked different than the newer OHV ones. My friend had a 1999 Sport and his looked like the old school ones. Another friend of mine still has his 2000 and its an OHV and has my upper intake but has a cover that says OHV. Its weird it could be the same affect with the SOHC. Damn Ford for making so many of the same Liter motor.

I was at the Ford lot today and took a look at a 2004 Sport and Sport Trac and they both had my intake. I'm wondering JohnV what is Job 1 and Job 2 and why is the Oil Fill on the other side with Job 2. Also you work for Explorer Express is this the reason the SOHC Supercharger hasn't been completed and what intake is keeping it from being made. I just don't want my intake and style not able to have the Supercharger

I don't think that they're making the 2004 sport; it was probably a 2003.

Yeah i was just there our dealership has all 2004's now including Sport Tracs. I didn't actually see any sports but i heard they were getting rid of the Explorer Sport but who knows.

Yep, Sport is dead.

is it better or something
The older style have what is called a Variable Induction System, it doesn't appear that the newer ones have that. With the VIS, the intake has a seperate path for the air to flow through for each side of the engine, with a connection in between the two halves in the middle. Below 3000 RPM, a valve closes that connection and each half of the engine gets air from its side of the intake only. Above 3000 RPM the connection is open and the air is shared by all 6 cylinders.

Here's a crude picture...

This may explain the difference between the 205 and the 203 horsepower claims on the different SOHC engines.
