What are any real world advantages as well as disadvantages to going from stock 15" wheels to say 17. 18 or 20"?

yup, what jim said. also, when people get bigger rims, they tend to get lower profile tires which gives a little more handling performance; smaller sidewalls dont flex as much, but you dont have to get bigger rims for that. you can put low profile tires on 15's or 16's, but it might look a little goofy.
