i have an 02 4.6l explorer and i just came back from the dealer with a recomendation to rebuild my tranny. ive got 103,000 miles on it and ive got slippage between gears. they refuse to touch my car at all, not even drain/refill my fluid. theyre asking 3100 for a new tranny so my dad just told me to come back. im pretty upset about the transmission failing on me so early.. is this a common problem to all 02+ explorers?

Go read the 5R55E Valve Body Rebuild Diary and see if some of the complaints voiced in that thread fit your situation. A flare is more than likely valve body related.

$3100? Dealer's got a boat payment to make. Go somewhere else

Glacier knows what he's talking about.

I should point out that the 5R55E is not your tranny, but the symptoms you will read about are all valve body symptoms. Do you have the 4R70W? Can you let me know? I happen to have a BRAND NEW 2002 4R70W Valve Body.

gotta be honest.. i dont know what my transmission is. thought u said i have a 5r55e. all i know is that its an 02 dohc.

i believe he has the 5r55w according to kit applications?

behind the 4.6 liter ? I am not sure of what went behind the 8's in 2002.
