When does the A/C compressor turn on?

ive had this car for like 2 years and just fixed the air conditioner today, and its ice cold when on max a/c and a/c but when i switch to to floor or the high vents (idk what there called) it still comes out just as cold

so is the compresser engauged all the time as long as the dial is turned to cold? if so i dont get why there is an a/c mode....?

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the A/C & heater section. You could check the compressor on each setting to see if the clutch engages. Let the vehicle idle in park, open the hood, then check the clutch.
