I hardly ever use when off roading, last weekend when going down a very steep grade stopped put it in nutrail put it in low and continued down the grade.seemed like it did not engage all the way.now a few buddies at work on 4x4 told me any time you go into low out it in reverse for about 10-15 feet, does this sound right.95 xlt 4.0,thanks for any info.

The correct procedure for going into 4lo is to put truck into neutral, with your foot on the brake and switch selector to 4lo. You should hear the shift motor click.
You should feel the differance as you will have to rev higher to move faster. When going down a hill and you want to go slow, put it into drive 1. Leaving it in drive will not slow you down(long story that I don't want to get into now).
Because you have a 95, you don't have auto hubs. With auto hubs you have to drive your truck in reverse about 10 to 15 feet to disengage the auto hubs. I believe that is what your friends were telling you. Again this is only for pre 95's that have auto hubs. You have solid hub assemblies, which means that your wheels are connected to your CV shafts(axles) directly

Your 95 does not require reversing at all. That is only for vehicles with autohubs. The correct procedure for low range is to put it in neutral (with the motor running), press the brake, then turn the selector to low, watch for the light to turn on, then put the truck back in gear.

Would the same hold true for my 96 XLT Control Trac? I have 2WD, 4WD Auto, and 4LO selections. Also, in 4LO, are all 4 wheels locked, or is does control trac send power to the wheels with most traction?

Yes the same is true for your 96. As for 4-low, it's supposed to be a 50/50 split, but I beleive that as the clutch that engages 4-low gets worn, it doesn't transfer all 50% of the power to the front wheels like it should (like a manual t-case).
