ok so with out jacking the rear wheel up i shook the rear driver rear it has play and i hear a clunk. i did make sure the lugs nuts were not loose there all tight.

Have someone else shake the rig. You watch the leaf sping bushings and shackles. Also watch the sway bar end links. (all the connections)

i jacked the rig up and both drivers and pass have alittle play slideing in and out i guess thats normal and makes sense. i did the 12 to 6 and 9 to 3 test its solid. just slides in and out a tad makes that same clunk. thanks

Yea... not normal dude. Take it to a shop and get them to tell you what it is... Usually I'll ask for them to look at it and let me know what needs to be fixed... then I do it myself..

Rear axles held in with a c-clip will move in/out a little (1/8") . If its a Limited slip it will slide more once the clutches wear.

But, you should be able to hear a clunk from it since going over a bump won't make the axle go sideways.

the clunk you hear/feel must be something else.

edit: here is one thread about it. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269136&highlight=play

thanks maniak was waiting for you to chime in. it did have the 1/8 inch slide. but when i slide it it had that some clunk.

edit: the trunk doesn't go side ways just a clunk of a bump. I'm gonna check under it tomorrow its been raining today. but that same clunk is when i pulled the wheel. anyway I'm gonna climb under it tomorrow and look. whats that big rubber cup in the passenger side right next to the pumpkin?

Anti harmonic weight? I see that you have a 94 so I belive that what you think is rubber is actually a very heavy weight. It should match the one on the back of the transfer case.

Mettler is correct, its a weight/dampener.

For the off-roaders, its primary job is to get hung up on rocks. For the rest of the people its supposed to help dampen vibrations. There is one similar to it on the back of the transfer case. That one too like to get hung up on rocks when wheeling.

I've removed both of mine years ago.

Curious, was there any noticable difference when you removed them? And doesnt your skid plate cover the dampener on the transfer?

For the rear one I can't say there was. It came off many years ago. The truck has always had a vibration right at 65, even with that on and the truck was still somewhat stock back then (ok, 4.10's, 2.5" lift, detroit locker and OME rear springs, but it still had less wear on it back then).

The transfer case one didn't seem to make any difference either but by then the truck has seen more wheeling. The one on the transfer came off more recently (1-2 years ago) because it almost came off when wheeling. I hit it hard enough that it bent out of shape. Much more of a hit and it would have broken the transfer case itself where the bolts hold the bracket to the case.
