... to replace the "vapor valve", i.e., that other fitting that comes out of the top of the gas tank? Do I need to do this or can I skip it? I can't even find this part anywhere at least under that name.

I guess you could but if there is nothing wrong with it why mess with it I did mine and didn't mess with it but its really your call
:)

where in you located in tulsa runderwo

I didn't and there's been no issue with my 95 sport (other than the starter going.)

They tell you to do it while the tank is out because its a safety part and Ford is covering thier butt by saying it needs replaced at that time. Besides its a major PITA to do all that for a little valve. That way you know the parts are good going back in. The valve is a rollover valve and in the event the truck goes rubber-side-up the fuel cannot leak back through the vapor hoses and canister and cause or fuel a fire.

You do not have to replace this thing. I replaced the gasket while i was there just so i know its new, and left the valve it worked fine.

No problem!

Merry Christmas
