I have a 2001 explorer sport and wondered how often I should get my oil changed? I know the recommendation is 5000kms or 3 months, which ever comes first but I maybe put 1000kms on the truck in 3 months and it is warm out and I don't tow anything. I don't want to waste money by changing it too often but don't want to make my engine wear by waiting too long. Last time I waited 5 months and the guy who drained it asked if I just changed it becase it was so clean. What would be a safe compromise?

I would say 5,000 miles which is about 8,000 kms. I use royal Purple in my Ex and do it every 6,000 miles. Which turns out to be about 9,600 kms. But, its totally up to you. You can always save some $$$$ and do it yourself. I mean, at oil change shops here in Michigan they want about $75.00 for an oil change using full synthetic. I can but the oil for half that.!! just a thought.

Id run a good synthetic oil and change every 6,000. For a little extra protection you could swap a new filter in and top the oil off at 3000.
