When to replace Ball Joints & Tie Rods

My new to me explorer is a 98 AWD 5.0, original everything, and it has 115k miles. Been reading all the INCREDIBLY helpful how-to's and am curious if you guys replace them when they fail or preemptively? I'm already replacing the failing shocks this weekend.. would like to put off spending more $$$. Advice much appreciated.

I see no reason to replace components that are in good working order. However, I do routinely jack up the vehicle and check for loose or worn parts. I guess I pay more attention to how it drives than most. 2,000,000 miles of truck driving will do that to you.
