rocket...good point...now that makes me doubt them, but i truely don't see a big difference between the excelleration but i can't say i've ever raced an 5.0 either.
have u ever drivin an 4.0, don't put it down, u never know. i think mine has a close amount of pick up as my friends 02 V8, but the rpms are different and it sounds much nicer. i'm not gona argue with u because i've never seen it in person and there is no reason to, i backed up my statement an i'm good. so hows the x running tommy?
Yes I have driven a 4.0, I have owned 2 and about backing up your statement. You did w/here say. Like Rocket said, its not possible for a 4.0 stock to beat a 5.0 stock no matter what a mag say's.
good, haven't seen much of ur x since i got banned over on robs site. yea i was just going off of what someone else said, i was lookin at the stats of my year explorer and the 5.0 in one of them brochures and i don't see how a underpowered truck weighing the same can beat a more powerfull engine....
but on the other hand i've never raced an 5.0 explorer, maybe i can see if todd wants to take his dads 4.6lt 02 out sometime...lol...jk...i'm not for street racing.
all right thought it might be a little flash back here...out of a 1998 brochoure heres how the figures lie down:
V6 SOHC
205hp @ 5,000rpms
250ft. tq @ 3,000rpms
Now the BIG 5.0(302)
215hp @ 4,200rpms
288ft. tq @ 3,300rpms
yeah thats what makes that statemnt that the 4.0 is faster false in the 4 doors, how can an V6 keep up with a V8 thats putting out 288ft. tq??????
sorry guyz, gess i shoulda looked at this stuff sooner...
Hey man sorry to burst your bubble again, but the 4.6 liter new gen explorers are even faster than the older gen 5.0 explorer stock for stock, and when ya start modding the 4.6 modular engine it just pulls away from the 5.0 leaps and bounds. Only downfall about the modulars is the expense of mods for them, let alone the availability of them. But it is always fun to race. I have raced a few Z28 camaros and a WS6 along with an SS too, and of course numerous GT's and a few of my buddies cobras. I did ok with the SS. We didnt really race, but he got on it for a little while and I didnt drop too far behind like he expected I would so he was very surprised about that. And the WS6 I actually beat!!! Hey a kill is a kill, but I do got to point out that he missed a gear. lol. The guy couldnt drive worth a crap anyways from me listening to the engine and hearing about what rpms he was shifting at. Talk about short shifting!!!! lol. Guy was probably shifting a full 800-1000 rpms too soon. hehe. Oh well, that moron probably though I had some sort of really hotrodded SUV after that one!!! When all I had was my exhaust. I might not have even had that on at the time. I cannot remember, cause it was around the time I got it installed. Good luck with the modding though. Hey tommy I havent heard anything else about that supercharger. Last I knew you were too busy to install. I take it, it is safe to assume you have installed it by now right??? Dyno tune yet? What numbers ya laying down on the dyno and at the track now? Well talk to yall later.
Stock for stock they are because the 2v 4.6 is 260HP vs 215 for the 5.0. However torque wise the 5.0 is ahead leaps and bounds. And for bolt ons the 5.0 is still king.
I havent looked that close at the 4.6 modded in the explorer (headers, pulleys ect) but I can tell you everything you ever wanted about the 4.6 mustang (same motor, different cams).
Typically a 2v 4.6 in a mustang gets full exhaust, cold air kit and MAF, pulleys and will get around 240=260 to the wheels.
Add ported heads and cams and " SOME" get about 300 to the wheels in a 5 speed.
Now the 5.0 has an advantage with the head department as for around $1000.00 you can get heads that flow as well as the 4.6 DOHC cars and any cam configuration you want.
But the GT-40s the explorer is blessed with will easily make 340hp with out even pulling them from the motor.
that is a cam, exhaust and eec tuning away.
4.6 in the Explorer is only rated for 239. and the difference for the 5.0 as far as tourque goes is only 6ft-lbs. Plus higher reving. Kinda of hard to beat.
There is a few iffies in there I feel I need to point out. First off there is no difference in the 4.6 liter explorer engine and the 99+ GT engines with the PI heads. The cams are the same too which when I first started learning about them I thought they were different also. The only reason Ford rated the explorer at 239 hp is because the stock ford explorer comes with a Y pipe into a highly restrictive single exhaust. That and a few other small things is all that is different between the two. They have the same engine but very very subtle differences between the two. You are right about the 5.0 being the bolt on king right now. It has an unlimited amount of aftermarket for it right now. But here as of about a year and a half ago that started to change around once the makers realized the untapped market for the modular engines that had already been around for more than a decade. Another thing is that the modulars being that they rev higher, take more advantage of the mods when they do get them. That is why the mods respond really well to even simple mods such as an intake and exhaust. About the 5.0 for the whole torque debate. Well The 5.0 engine does have more peak torque and a little more average torque through the powerband, but the advantage we got is the 5R55W 5 speed auto tranny that keeps us in the powerband alot better than the 4 speed 4R70W trannies did. Once they make some shift kits and built tranny upgrades these trannies will be very nice to have. Let us pray that the 05 mustangs will be sporting that same tranny(they will have a 5 speed auto of some sort). As for modding a 4.6 explorer engine? It will have the exact same outcome that the same mods would have on the 4.6 in the GT. But one thing such as true dual exhaust will have a waaaaay bigger affect in our trucks than the cars because they come with a still restrictive, but at least some form of dual exhaust from the factory. So far I only have a full custom true dual 2.5" exhaust and a MAC intake. With those, going by my 1/4 mile ET and trap speeds and taking into account my vehicle weight I have around 235 or so to the wheels. Which sounds about right being that those two little mods open up the explorer 4.6 to breath aloooooot more than stock did. I went from running a 16.3 stock( my track suxxxxxxxx!!! b@llz!) to after adding the exhaust and intake running a 15.85 @ 85 and that was with my 20's on too because I was too lazy to switch them out again to go race. lol. I should have cut about .15 or so seconds off of my time just by simply dropping those heavy rims and tires for the stockers. But I was in a hurry and just felt like racing. Now a days adding ported heads and cams to the 4.6 will pretty much guarantee you 300 to the wheels. The PI heads and intake is better than the older non-PI ones, but still has alot of room for improvement. Right now the biggest drawback between the 5.0 and the 4.6 is that the 4.6 is just coming into its own (although a day late and a dollar short) so the mods are still verrrrrrry expensive where as the mods for the 5.0 are comparably cheap. I wish I oculd get a set of good heads with cams for under $2,000 for my 4.6!!! Man that would be a dream. Heck the longblock that I will have VT building me with stage 2 ported and cammed heads will run me around $8,000 for a 1,200 hp turbo rated longblock. With all that money I could get a killer 347 setup for the 5.0!!! You will be seeing aloooot more from the 4.6 here in the near future in terms of mods offered.
One thing I forgot to mention is that the only real difference in how you mod the explorer 4.6 engine and a GT engine is when taking into account stuff that has to fit a certain way in the chassis, like for instance headers. Just caused they got headers for the 4.6 liter GT, does not mean those headers will fit around our different chassis design. Oh and another thing though it had nothing to do with power output of the engine is that the explorer blocks are aluminum where as the GT blocks are not. And the explorer have a romeo type flywheel where as the newer GT's went back to the windsor flywheel, or the other way around. Forget sometimes. But it is something like that.
Yes I was considering the D-1sc its just so big and boosty, LOL
Id like to talk with you about some of your plans, im rather interested.
And believe it or not yes this truck is gonna be a Daily Drudger for a while (I do mostly interstate travel, so it wont kill me too bad)
All my plans are currently on paper, but im in the process of setting them into action. Im just having to do this project one bite at a time, makes the cost not so hard to swallow (yea I know horrible pun)
anyhoo hit me up sometime
I dont know of anyone here that has on in the 14's. But it is easily possible with all the heads cams intake packages we have available. gears, CAI, exhaust and all that stuff on there would net you 14's. But it would be a serious project and not some half way stuff. Just as serious as the nitro or charger route would be.
a buddie down here has one with heads, cam, intake, headers, trans, and so on that goes 14 on motor and 13 or high 12s on spray.

Oops I should have said all the H/C/I packages YOU have not we. I forget sometimes that I am now in the 4.6 modular crowd now. But still a 5.0 guy at heart.
i want you to know that i special in the 4.6 market and know alot about them but as you know by brother has a 5.0 explorer, him and i also own a turbo charge 5.o mustang and we pretty much own a v8 miata but i also have 15,000 dollars in ineventory just for 4.6's and i have a markviii race car and daily drive. it is ok to have both and love both for each of there more indering qualities. i find that in life you just use the right engine for the job.LOL

Yeah the thing that gets me is that the 4.6 has been out for a looooong time in vehicles and only till the last year or so did anyone really try to make any kind of real aftermarket for it. I mean I can only list less than a handful of places that make heads for them. Let alone cams and intakes also to say the least. I love both engines alot. The 5.0 has some low down grunt where as the 4.6 is an engine that loves to rev. I am glad I got a 4.6 though because I know just as much about modding this engine as I did with the 5.0 which after a while was quite a bit. Now instead of going with the 347 stroker, I will be going with the 302 stroker if ya get my meaning. At least one good thing comes with my having to wait another year and a half before I begin my project. It will give the aftermarket that much more time to catch up. But even as I stand VT and Kenne Bell will be having my business, and possibly Lentech too.
Never though of that!!! Good idea!!! I bet they could hit 10's that way!!! Anyone know how to calculate the maximum velocity a car can reach in 1320 feet I am sure we all can have 10 second truck if we are really commited to it! hehe. Way to think outside the box JPC.
Lordy, the way this thread is going someones going to out for blood pretty soon....LOL. IMO the bottom line is this. The Explorer, wether it be 2 or 4 door, 4.0 or 5.0, it was not originally designed to be a dragster. It is more suitable for off-roading than dragging. So if you are dead set on having a dragster, get a LS1 and mod it out. For an all out trail crusher, get the X.

Some would say that there are better offroading rigs out there just like someone always will tell you that explorers arent sports cars and were not designed to go fast. Just a matter of opinion that I personally dont pay attention to.
