I managed to break my thermostat housing and had to order a replacement. The replacement came with a 45 degree water neck for the upper radiator hose, and everywhere online I've searched for a new housing for a 98 5.0 Explorer has been the 45 degree part. My stock piece is 90 degrees, and I'll need that for my radiator hose to work without hitting my fan.

I found an old thread on this with no reply, but it seems the 95 Mustang GT 5.0 thermostat housing is a 90 and will work just fine? My problem is the same as his. Is there a hose bent for the 45 that I can buy, or will a replacement Mustang part work?

Thanks for any help, I'm hoping to get the Explorer on the road soon, I got caught in the snow in my GTO today with summer tires, spun, and jumped a curb, I need a new wheel and fender repair :(

Yikes, terrible reviews there. Thank you for the info, though.

I followed one of the recommendations there and went with the O Reilly's part for the 95 Mustang GT 5.0 using an Explorer thermostat and gasket. I had to trim the gasket a hair to clear the bolt holes, but it shouldn't be a problem. The gasket was sticky on one side, easily held the thermostat in.

That's really weird, was there a half year change in 98 from 45 degree to 90?

What is the build date of your 98? Don't know about the thermostat housing, but there definitely was a mid-year change of the cooling system in the 98 model. Mine is a 98, with a build date of 8/98. For one thing, it does not have the oil cooler, which always shows up in 98 catalogs. There are probably more changes. Parts from the 99 catalog are fine.

if you get one from a fox body mustang with a 302 in it (79-93) it is the same thing. i broke 2 in one day. when i had my capri on the road i remembered that the housing looked identical to the explorer 5L housing. i was lucky because i have a 87 5L mustang stashed at work for when i can get the motor and trans from it, and robbed it.
