time to redo my 91 XLT 4.0 and was wondering what companys yall recommend for parts. I am going to stick with the 4.0 as I have a NEW tranny in it (less than 20k miles) and my engine is TIRED (192,000) so I dont wish to do a 5.0 swap. What I am thinking is bigger pistons, cam, headwork, headers, ect to give it that punch it needs but am looking for sites to find the parts. Any help is mucho appriciated!

Thanks ok89..I will give them a look! I own an import performance shop so if they have the goods may have to set up with them..or anyone know of anyplace that we can set up with. If yall can help me locate a place I would be happy to set up with them and get you guys stuff at a discount, I dont need to be making $$ off it as I dont work on Explorers but mine, we stick to imports (lol..although my X IS from Canada) so if I can help you guys get cheap parts, seems like a good exchange for all the knowledge yall share!

ok..went and looked at their site..$817.25 for 6 pistons??? Ummm..no thanks.

But dude, those are MAGIC pistons :D I don't think anyone else really deals with modded 4.0 motors, it's kinda a shame.

hey PHAT wondering if you deal with weber carbs. I have a highly modified toyota pickup 22R. I have the DGAV progressive. I need to recalibrate tried to get help at redline but they been as helpful as dog doodles on my lawn. They have a recalibration kit but I dont know which one and I cant seen to pry it from them.:bounce:

Hey PHAT, do you call them corners instead of ricers:rolleyes:
The wierd thing is my wife is from Des Moines and her father and some half broters and sisters live there and I can't say I have seen any ricers around Des Moines.

I am from back South..been in Davenport for a bit over a year now, and there are a TON of Imports in Iowa. I have quite a few customers in Des Moines as well as here and Chicago. The import market is picking up..SEMA has taken polls for many years and the rise in imports last 3 years is outstanding (now be aware also that the Caviler, Sunfire, Focus, ect are all classified as Imports by standards) and we are growing as a shop as well. We do performance mods, audio, paint, and air suspensions so we try to offer as much as possible. I don't call them "corners" OR "ricers"..I call them imports and damn good for business!

Iggy..are you refering to the 32/36 DGAV carb? Let me know and I will get a call into their dealer tech guy to see what ya need!

The OHV 4.0L is a very specialized market for aftermarket parts.

If you really want to hop up a 4.0L you had better plan on spending a pretty penny and getting Sven Pruett's book called "How to build and modify Ford 60 degree V-6 engine's" It is the bible for any 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, or 4.0L project.

Yes 6 forged pistons from JE in CA do run about $700+ for a .040 overbored OHV 4.0L. Head work is not cheap either, roller rockers are way too much to even consider unless you are racing only, etc....

Custom rods and a cam help add to the cost of building a true perfomance 4.0L.

I'm getting ready to dive headfirst into a 230HP natuarally aspirated OHV 4.0L buildup, should take me about 6 months and cost about $2K, however the end result is a bulletproof bottom end and a very reliable powerful V6...

I am starting to see that this is kinda an expensive task..maybe I should swap engines? Can I go with a different motor that will bolt in and use my same tranny? I have looked at the 5.0 conversion yet that seems to be a huge and expensive conversion. Maybe I am smarter just rebuilding the engine back to stock..any one have ideas on part cost to refresh engine and should I line bore the block and replace everything? Anyone??

you can spend $500 on a 5.0L conversion or you can spend $5K on a 5.0L conversion.
It all depends on how you do it, how much of it you do yourself, what 5.0L you use, etc....

In either case you cannot keep the tranny.

Now you can bolt a supercharger on to a stock 4.0L and make some pretty nice power. There are posts all over this board on how to do this.

there are a ton of bolt on mods for the 4.0L that can really open her up too, but for serious power or anything over 7 # of boost some internal upgrades are recommended....

I kicked around the thought of a Supercharger..around $3k so its not bad. Any idea on what I need to refresh my engine and does anyone make a kit like they do for the big blocks? I am going to contact Barnes and Nobles about that book..thanks!

Phat what prt of the south. I didn't meen to offend by the corner/ricer coment or your buisiness I just can't stand these cars. I'm a muscle car street rod guy. It's just Iowa is known for corn and they like to mix it with there gas. Hell you can buy 89 octane cheaper than 87 octane. Is Davenport close to the Ilinois border?

Dan..no worries! I moved to Iowa from South Carolina where I was stationed and went to college. I was raised in Texas and Florida, was also stationed in Virginia. I do imports as thats what I know..we do import car/trucks as well as sportbikes. I also love the classic cars..detroit muscle was where it was at! But hey..our little 4s are doing 9s/10s..so we scoot also! I have done alot of work on mustangs so the X should be basic. This site offers a TON of help..great to see such help out there! I look forward to the future and help!

DGAV

Yahoo Ok I give my setup info hope it helps.
Toyota 22R bored and stroked to 2.6
94M pistons 9 to 1 compression
20R head ported 44mm intake valves 36mm exhaust
cam 230 duration @ .050, 440 max lift int/ext
cannon larger plenum intake manifold
header

This what jets I have in carb
prim idle 60
sec idle 50
prim main 140 air corrector 170
sec main 155 air corrector 175

I know they have a recalibration kit for the DGAV for engine that are not stock. 701-DGV6 or 701-DGV4 In This kit has different pump nozzles.
I need to have one with primary idle jets in it cause Iam to lean on my lean best idle adjustment.
The other info that complicates the situation is that Iam at 7000 feet but I need to setup for around 1700 feet too. I figure If I could setup for around 3500 feet that or have the jets to change it that will help.
Thanks for the help hope this is not to confussing
