like the ones on the stock roof rack cross-bars that slide in the track to hold it in place when the black knob is tightened ?

I could use 8 of these for a new rack that is getting fabbed up for me.I thought I could just swing by the Home depot but......they don't have anything like this ?
the stock ones are nice, curved upward so it would slide better.

any ideas where I can get these,or something like them !! they measure 7/8" wide {something like a square threaded washer only thicker}
thanks,

junk yard?

stock nuts won't back out completely,

I would have to hacksaw off the knob/bolt to get it off.

but I just found a supplier that will send me 16 samples of something called a weld nut, with 1/4" thread in SS !!
it's an oval shape and low profile thread, this should work pretty well !{ I hope ?} it's hard to match this stuff up on line without having it in front of you.

it looks something like this, but in stainless steel .

projection weld nut

McMaster-Carr has these in various sizes and shapes http://www.mcmaster.com

type 94581A117 in the search field or go to catalog page 2971

They have them in 18-8 Stainless Steel or plain steel. They are designed for spot welding (projection weld) to steel plate. I used them in something I designed a long time ago.

Jeep YJ's use a nut like that to hold down the hardtop. You could easily aquire those nuts from a Jeep place. I think they are aluminium though....

The Nut plates you are talking about are a metric thread. and you can get them from any ford dealer, but they will cost you! I know I tried to get an extra set of 4 tie points, and nut plates and it was going to cost me over $100 for 8 pieces.....

My suggestion would be to go to a junk yard, and or have a machine shop make something up for you......

that's the place that's sending me the 16 peice samples !! and that's the same piece as well !!!

they are sending me 1/4" thread, should come in a few days ,when I get them,I'll be able to match some SS bolts to them {not sure how long yet},my guess is that the bolt length has to be perfect so the end does not come in contact with the bottom of track when snugged up ?,I also would like to get some type of security screw/allen key head ? in Stainless.

check McMaster-Carr

I realize that they have kind of a sucky web navigation, but they have a really good selection of fasteners and they will let you buy in small quantities (no min order). We buy lots of stuff from them at work to repair equipment, fabricate fixtures, etc.

At work, I have the catalog which is 3528 pages. They have a lot of stuff. I would love to see one of their warehouses, as they usually ship on the same day they receive the order:)

cool

Just be sure not to lose the bit, cause no one else will have a replacement :D

ouch.....

never thought of that, should have ordered 2.

It's a good idea to use the tamper resistent bolts, though. A friend once lost a whole Yakama setup w/ bike racks attached. $$$

I have the Yakama rack with locking towers, but it is really easy to steal the bike rack part if there isn't a bike in them.

Hmmm...maybe I'll have to get some tamper resistent bolts......
