Any one know where the trans fluid is going?
I put in 2 quarts about a 1 month ago and 1 quart today.
No visible leaks or smoke from 1993 XLT Auto.

Thanks
Ed

The A4LD tranny in the first-gen Explorers has a vacuum modulator. There is a possibility that the modulator has a ruptured diaphragm and some fluid is getting sucked up the vacuum line and into the intake.

I had the exact same problem.
Get the modulator looked at ASAP!... its' really small.

And until you do --KEEP PUTTING MORE OIL IN -- DON'T LET IT RUN WHILE LOW ON OIL!!

I didn't get it fixed immediately and I ended up damaging my tranny and costing me 3000 to fix it!!!! (more than buying an Ex of the same year!!)

Pull the vacuum line off at the modulator on the passenger side of the transmission and see if any fluid is present. If fluid is present in that vacuum line, the modulator needs to be replaced.

I found the line and it has fluid in it!
There is a heat shield in the way!

1. How do you get to the Modulator?
2. How much for part?
3. How much to have done? (The easy way out)!

Thanks
ED

we usually charge 40 dollars to put a modulater in at our shop, you dont have to but i found it easier to remove the crossmember and let the transmission down alittle to get to it easier but i am also doing it on a lift but you CAN do it by reaching up and to it just pry that shield out of the way and you can get a wrench in there to take the modulater hold down bracket off, i beleive its a 10mm stud, there will be a nut on the stud first holding the shield deal to the tranny, remove the nut , move the shield out of the way, then just take the stud out, there will be a nail looking thing in the end of the old modulate DONT lose it ! you must put it in the new modulater it wont come with a new one, while your at it replace the piece of rubber vacume hose going from the modulater to the steel line so you can make sure you dont have any air leaks from old hose. if you have any questions feel free to ask !
