Where do I find what alternator I have?

I've got the '94 4.0 V6, wanting to replace the alternator brushes, but have to choose between 75 amps and 95/130 amps. The alternator is still in the car, but I saw nothing on the case to tell me. Can't find it in the manual either. How do I know which one I have?

Just get the 130 amp. No reason to get the smaller ones, they are interchangeable, and they usually all cost the same amount.

Okay, one more. Is this something, as a practical matter, I need to take the alternator out to do? Looking in behind there today, looked like it might be possible to leave it in, but pretty tight. Less frustration to just pull the alternator out and work on it, or better to leave it in and risk cussing in front of the kids and neighbors when I drop a screw?

I'm sorry, I misread your post the first time. You are looking for brushes.... My mistake. You should be able to find a sticker with the information for your alternator on the back near the power lead. FWIW, it is probably a 95 amp.... I didn't even think explorers came with a 75 amp alternator, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Then again, doesn't the 95 amp and 130 amp use the same brushes anyways? So I guess what I said at first was almost right in a completely wrong way

As far as changing them out.... Yeah, take out the alternator. It is one of the easiest parts under the hood to take off that engine anyways. Picturing it in my head.... I can't see it working out with it still in the car. Besides, if you are going to change the brushes, you should change the bearing too. I've always just figured, if the brushes are worn out, then the bearing can't be too far behind.
