Where is the remote locking receiver located?

Hi all
I have searched through the site and cannot find an answer to my question, so sorry if I am being a numpty and didn't see it......

Ok, when we bought our 98 Explorer the previous owner had lost the remote fob. I checked with Ford and they want an arm and a leg to supply a new fob and program it to the car. I have just bought a used fob and receiver from a breakers (yet to arrive in the mail) and therefore my question is where can I find the location of the receiver?
I guess that logically my next question will be, can I just swap out the old receiver for the newer one (it is also from a 98 Explorer) or do I have to do some wizardry to make it work in the car?

You should not need to caqhnge the main module (which is in the compartment with the jack at the rear) but just program it for the remote.

programming a 95/96/97

cycle iginition from off to run 5 times within 10 sec, ending in run, all doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode, press any button on the 1st remote transmitter. door locks will cycle(lock then unlock) to confirm programming. to program additional remotes - press any button on the next remote(upto 4 total possible) locks will cycle again. turn iginition off. locks will again cycle to indicate the end of the programming mode.

programming a 98/99/00/01

same as above - but cycle iginition off to run 8 times within 10 seconds

Thanks for the info Howard. I have seen this procedure elsewhere on this forum however reading your comment promoted me to try the procedure even though I do not have a remote fob.... Upon keying the 8th time the locks did cycle, so, does that mean that my control box is OK or does this happen anyway? If, as you suspect, the control module is OK then I should be able to buy a new remote fob and program it in as you said???
I had already bought a new remote fob off a guy on ebay but his procedure did not produce the goods (I think from memory it said 5 key cycles), so he gave me a refund and I sent it back.

It sounds like the module is fine. All you need is the remote. Which may be either a single button one (1997-early 1998) or a Two button one (late1998-mid1999). My guess is you want the two button one based on the eight turns to activate the programing mode. If there are none on e-bay you can try these people http://www.usautomotive.co.uk who are not far from you.

My '98 (and my current '00) had a 2 button fob like this one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Genuine-F...ryZ21654QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This type requires the 8 times on/off method to programme. HOWEVER, I'm not sure if you need at least one working (ie already programmed) fob to get the sequence started. All you can do is try it when your fob arrives (before ripping out the module). BTW, the receiver is mounted in the N/S rear wheel arch, accessible through the jack stowage compartment.

Thanks shytot4x4, I guess I'll have to get one to try it anyway, then if it still refuses to talk to the reciever I may have to pay Frauds there extortionate sum to program it (quoted £80 and they would need it for a few hours???)

Frauds... It will take them about 5 minutes. And that includes time for a cup of tea...

It sounds like you've already practiced the on/off 8 times thing. Make sure that on the 8th 'on' you leave the ignition switch in the 'on' position with the ignition lights lit. Press any button on the remote fob you want to program. If the system recognises the fob the locks will cycle like they did on the 8th 'on'. If you have more fobs you can do this for a total of 4 key fobs. Each time the locks cycle when pressing the fob button confirms the programming.

Hi all
Just to conclude this thread, sorry I forgot to do it before, I got a replacement fob from a member of this forum (thanks) and tried the same procedure again, 8 times, and it worked straight away. So everything in central locking world is good for me now.
