Re-read what I posted. You CAN drain ALLyour fluid on the 4R70W. And as for capacity I meant total fluid capacity...NOT pan. On the 4R70W you can drain the TC.....which drains the last of the fluid.... do when you drain everything and thre TC your drain and fil is more or less a total change.

I'm confused about something.. so the transmission and transfer case are using the same fluid? Is it always this way?

About 2 or 3 more than total capacity. But on your transmission, it IS possible to drain the TC, and you can do a pretty thorough fluid change without flushing. It's just an option. On the A4LD and 5R55E, you cannot drain the TC and hence flushing is the ONLY way to completely change the fluid.

...and he said 2 or 3 more quarts not TIMES...


Also the V8 trannies are known for lasting a long time. It's the V6 trannies that benefit most from valve bodies and shift kits.

Change the fluid in the AWD case also, it takes two quarts or so, use mercon V for that too.

I was going to use Mobil 1 synthetic... wouldn't that be better?

standard mercon V is a synthetic blend (not full), if your using mobile 1 rated for mercon V use then yes it is better. Otherwise if it is rated for something lower (mercon III or IV) it will not have the proper friction modifiers and such that Ford's Mercon V requirement calls for. Check the bottle, and be sure that it carries the mercon V rating.

I think the rating recommended in 1996 was Mercon, Mercon V is the next step, and the Mercon is obsolete next month. Regards,
