I have a 2005 Explorer with the basic tow package which has been great. But i noticed today after getting the trailer out of storage i had no lights on the trailer. I checked everything and then noticed that where the weather has been really bad here, snow ice etc building up behind the back wheel the snow and ice has ripped the connector and wires out from the tow wire.

Basically if you look at this link
http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.com/doc/40335.pdf

i have b and c they look good but i have lost connector 'a' and just have 3 wires hanging down so what do i do. Should I splice 'b' and connect it 'a' or can i buy the connector 'a' from somewhere? Where would i buy it and what is it called....thanks

Sounds like you are saying that you have all 3 connectors, "A', and "B" are plugged into each other, but A is no longer connected to the vehicle wiriing. In that case, you need to either:
1. Get the vehicle wires back into the "A" connector.
2. If "A" connector was damaged (can't do #1), then get a new "A" connector and reinstall the wires.
3. Or cut off connector "B", and butt-connect/solder the wires for "A" and "B" permanently. Better yet, skip the 4-flat connector (B-to-C) and replace with a 7-way/4-way combo, mounted under the bumper.

Thanks guys, thebrakeman...my problem is number 2. I think the ice just built up so much it simply broke off and i don't know where it is. Luckily I am on a business trip next week in the Detroit area, so I will try to get to a junkyard, because in my area there is very little to go to. Like the first post said I don't think this would be an aftermarket piece, not even sure what it is called. Thanks. I will re post when I get back next week (may end up just doing what you suggested in 3)

To get a harness "A", a junkyard would likely want to sell you the entire wiring harness. Who knows how far up the vehicle that goes.

Give it a try, but I think you will end up with my option #3.

yeah option three looks about right...I am in no real rush for it as I only use the trailer in the day. I am just looking up junkyards in Detroit. What I need is a 'pick and pull' so that i can just rip the piece off I need. There is a great one in Green Bay. I went through last year and found it by accident, but got a lot of things I needed for another vehicle, especially 'pig tails' which for some reason seem to be so expensive after market through the dealership....thanks guys
