A friend of mine now has 2 JL w0's for his truck and only needs a hu to complete the package. Basically he is on a tight budget and only needs something that can play mp3's and has pre-outs for the amp. He is keeping his factory speakers in his f150 for now, but might upgrade them later. So out of these three models, I am wondering what yall think would be the best for him. (He listens to mostly alternative, with a little rap, but not a whole lot, he is going for quality mainly)

clarion

i'd go with a pioneer dehp7500mp from ebay and installation kits from best buy ;) ok ok so i know that wasnt an option but thats what id do...well thats what i did :p

All three are nice, I'm partial to Kenwood. If it were me:
1.Kenwood
2.Panasonic
3.Clarion

What Alec posted. Huge fan of Pioneer, and I really don't like any of those you posted. Quality and tight budget don't go together real well by the way. Spend the extra $20 and get something good, like what he posted.

i'll pass that along to him, but its his money, not mine...

mainly i am wondering which of those three would be the better; he is pretty adament about not spending much (he wasn't even going to get an in-dash until he figured out its near impossible to wire subs to a factory deck)

It's actually pretty easy to wire up subs to a factory deck if your amp has line-in. However, it sounds like crap. If he wants to do it that way, tap into the rear speaker lines and run those taps instead of RCAs. Wire up the rest of the amp like normal.

that was the kicker, the "it sounds like crap" part

so he figures any hu sounds better than no hu, which I can't really argue with, he also wants mp3's

anyway, thanks for the info, but he kinda has it knocked down to those 3

i'd go with a pioneer one

well i managed to talk him out of those 3 i mentioned, now he is mulling over that pioneer and the sony 5500 model

i got the 5700 and though I have not wired it yet, he went to the store with me when we looked at it and they hooked one up to some speakers and it sounded amazing, the dso feature really is incredible, so thats why he is thinking about that one...but a few friends of ours have a pioneer too, maybe he will just flip a coin, lol

ugh, sony car audio, ugh

I'll go against the grain on this one. For $35 you can get a Qwestar hu, which plays mp3's and has amp pre-outs. Installed mine last weekend and works and sounds great for $35.

* Forgot to mention you can pick it up at Circuit City*

they all sound pretty good to me. I personally have JVC which sounds great.

Only Clarion I ever had had problems.. I continously kept going to back to get it fixed and finally after the 4th time it went in they replaced it with a Alpine..

Prior to the Clarion the only thing I owned was Alpine, but they got stolen so I bought a top of the line model Clarion.. It kept breaking.. I wouldn't buy another clarion ever..

My current deck in the Ranger is a Alpine 7897 and I love it.. If I was your friend I would recommend alpine..
