Ive been following the discussions on gear ratios and noticed that alot of you guys have that on your tags... I'm not anywhere close to a mechanic, and just reading this post has answered alot of my questions about the ratios. However, I have one that hasn't been addressed....I have a 4x4...does this mean that I have 2 sets of diff's? And if so...if I change the ratio of the rear, does the front need to be changed as well?

Thanks....

yeap!

you're right, you do have two difs since like you said, your rig is 4 wheel drive. When you go and decide to change gears in any of the difs you'll need to do the same on the other one. Well, unless you don't want to use 4X4 anymore or will be running your rig in heavy mud. I can't imagine having it any other way. Front and back difs have to turn the wheels at the same rate of speed. If you'd have different ratios then you'll be running one set of wheels faster then the other.

Hope this makes sense,

;)

Ive noticed alot of people talking about going 4.10 or 4.56... why not go for the middle and get 4.30? (Or whatever is closest to that... Im not sure about that 0) I really havent heard anybody talk about them.. and I know ford motorsport makes them for the 8.8... just a thought.

why not?

It all depends on the size of the tire you're running. 31's are still fine with 3:73 with a few engin mods. 33's prefer 4:10 since that gives them more torque and saves on fuel while on the highway. 35's love 4:56 for same reasons. If you're running 35's and still have stock 3:73 ratio your fuel economy suffers since there's more wheel to turn at the same engine speed (rpm) oposed to regular tires. Off roading would not be much fun as well - less torque.
Why not go 4:30? What are the available sizes anyway??

Ive never heard of 4.30. All anyone talks about is 4.10 or 4.56. If you go check out your local blue oval, and go look at their motorsport catalog... they show the 4.30 gears in there. Its an option!!! Which I think Im going to do myself. Maybe If i get them the will become popular.. ;) But anyways, I was planning on getting 31's and I have 3.73 gears now... if I went 4.10 I think it fell a little short, and 4.56 I was afraid would be too much more... so sounds like 4.30 is for me.. just a little more pull without being an overkill.

what catalog?

I was sitting at a Ford dealership today for an hour. Shoul of looked for something. Instead I was checking the new Explorers, Sport and Sport Track. Sport Track has 4:10 gears as an option and it just says that it will be available soon. Some of the things they list on the sheet is really ridiculus. They list how many different chimes it has and how many warning lights. Nothing really on the list that you can add to improve your off roading capabilities. Except for front tow hooks perhaps and even tow hooks are tricky, round enclosed so it'll be hard to attach a tow strap to it anyway. But, I'm off the subject. Ratios and size of tires really depend on what you'd like to do with your truck. I figure that 4:10 with 32's or 33's would work for me perfect. I'm doing a lot of driving on the highway.
Should work good off road as well.
Personal preference I guess. Let us know if you get these gears and how much the whole thing set you off.

I don't think the problem is finding the 4.30 for the 8.8. I don't think there is a 4.30 for a reverse dana 35 (front axle)..

4X2 only?

Then, would it be available for two wheel drive only models?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you get better gas mileage if you were to run 33s for street driving.

hmm. I didnt look that much into it. I was there again.. but I couldnt find the page again in the catalog... oh well..

?

Better gas milage with 33's? How come? At the moment I still have stock gears on my baby - 3:73 L/S. I thought the bigger you go on your tires the higher the gas milage. Isn't that right?

Ack! I didnt even think about having to buy for the rear and front! Hehe. Bummer. Okay.. the rear is an 8.8" right? Whats the front? Hmmm... does anyone know about 4.30 for front and back? Thats my lucky number!

Hey Perry,

$750 is a good price. I paid about $1000 to get my 4:56's put in.

Nick, the Explorer uses the Dana 35 diffy in front. There are no 4.30 gears available for it at this time. Only the 8.8 rear axle.

wow... its that much to get gears put in?? So what the estimated total cost for 4.56's plus install?

Gears available....

"OK" Got my quote today for new gears front and back. The only choice available for the fromt Dana 35 was either 4:56 or 5:13, Yes the lower stuff is available 4:10 etc. But not the 4:88's that I wanted. Since the ring & pinion have to be R & R'ed I wanted a Detroit Locker in the back. Only 552.95 for the rear locker and free labour since they were doing the Gears anyway. Total price, new gears front and rear with a detroit in the back $2247.62 Ouch! Labour was $700 everything else was parts.

The local junkyards have 8.8's with disk brakes complete set-up for $200. I think I'm going to by one of these, upgrade to 4 wheel disk brakes and install the 4:56's myself. I have mechanic friends that can show me how to set the back-lash & preload etc.

D4

Sorry to bust in, but we decided that the D4 was 3:73 Limited Slip?

Will this be OK if I move up to 31's? Thanks guys, I'm new around here, and this is a great place!

3:73's "OK"

I'm pretty sure the D4 is 3.73 LS.

And you will be just fine with 31's running 3.73 gears.

I heard that a plain jane white 94 Explorer with 33's and only 3.73 gears made it up Potatoe Salid Hill and he was one of 3 or 4 that made it up Double Whammy at MOAB. You will probable notice little difference running 31's.

Oh my God! is he modest or What. What Rob means is that Histruck with 3.73 gears made it up the infamous and very dangerous Potato Salid Hill. :D Of course having a locker and a L/S didn't hurt either. :D
