I've been seeing a lot of this on the '96-'98 Explorers and I'm wondering if it can happen on our '97 (173K miles). It has manual climate controls (the one with the 3 knobs.....not the automatic system). Dash removal doesn't rate very high on my list of desireable things to do but having a dealer do the repairs rates even lower.

We don't have the symptoms.....I'm just wondering if it can happen to ours.

It can definitly happen to yours. You could also end up with a leaky heater core at some time. It took me 2 weekends to remove and replace my first one. One weekend the second time. 2 hours 15 minutes the 3rd. It's really the heater core that creates the much bigger problem.

You could opt to cut it out but that's also a hassle, IMO if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Quit worrying about sumthin' that "could happen" mate, you'll worry your life away....:)

yup, good advice.....I'll worry about when (and if) the time comes.

It's not a worry of "if" it's a worry of "when"

True that. I thought I was in the clear since I had about 140k problem-free miles. Then I pretty much parked the Explorer and only put about 4k miles a year on it now. Now all of a sudden the blend door goes duing those 4,000 miles I drove last year?

Lack of use is sometimes worse then too much use

It's the ford 100k warranty, everything breaks after 100k :D lol

Letting them sit is one of the worse things you can do...

I bought the blend door kit from Rockauto.com, about $15 total...cut out the bottom of the plenum (as per info up in the STICKYs), put in the new door...bing, bang, boom...done! Works like a charm, saved about $1,000
