Which motor SOHC or OHV?

Hey, don't be bringing the new one into this ;) Yes, its OHV, but the two extra cylinders disqualify it :p. I agree on the 300hp 5.0. But I'm going for the street look :D

:jealous:

Almost 150K on my SOHC. Can't say I have much to complain about. Love the power. Raced an IS300 auto-stick and beat it to 60. Best part was the look on the guy's face when I was right beside him all the way through 1st and 2nd speed. :D

The way I used to treat this thing, it should be  and the motor should be in multiple pieces. The SOHC/5R55E combination is tough to beat, and is IMO the best Explorer combination out there for the price and fuel economy. Only other thing I might wish for is a V-8 AWD, but I'm fine with RWD and GOOD tires.

exactly. Like i said before- the SOHC has a bad rep because of the chain tensioner recall.... other than that- what noticable problems has it had over the OHV and V8? Other than the block itself, all the accessories and components are the same... and not to mention the SOHC has a better tranny than the OHV

i think the people who say the OHV is better on this site are just jealous :p

lol

I was one of the jealous ones.... now I'm just jealous of V8's...

After the debut of the OHC, the OHV also used the 5R.

I've had no problems with my OHV. My parents have an '03 V6, and the extra power is nice, but 99% of the time, mine has plenty of power. Mine always starts the first time, and has no leaks at all. Not bad for 111k. That having been said though, I'd probably get an SOHC if I were buying another X. More power, and it seems to run quieter than the old pushrod block.

I truly believe, and Aldive will certainly back me up on this, that the SOHC is more efficient. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see OHVs pushing 25+ on the highway, even with the short gearing I have on my truck. The OHV was good for its time back in the early to mid 90's when most SUV motors were also quite low on power, but it's a different story today.

Ford is using the SOHC 4.0 as the base Mustang motor. Obviously they have some faith in it to pass up the Duratec motor. All us 4.0 owners should be happy to see our Cologne motor finally put where it belongs, in a sports car. Trust me, wind an SOHC upto 6K, and tell me that sound isn't amazing for a 6. Now imagine it through the true dual setup on the Stang. *drools*

Amen to that Majisto! After having owned my SOHC now for a little over 5 months, I actually floored it for the first time on the freeway when nobody was around and it was something else. That sound is beautiful. It took several botox injections to wipe the smirk off of my face. :D
I love my SOHC.

an intake sounds pretty good on a sohc about 3k-4k rpms....

well i'm a big fan of all of the engines, like todd said the ohv was a good reliable engine. An the ohc have a bad rap for the problems with vaccume items and timeing chains. I know, my rents owned my x before me and they had it into ford 6 times for the same thing untill i said ford is stupid, got on here and found out the problem, IAC...

Anywayz, like the ohv, bad tranny; i love my sohc, plenty of torque and mini van passing hp....wouldn't trade it for anything, except todds 5.0.... :p Also, haven't had any trouble with it since the IAC and two O2 sensors, running great and has never failed me yet, nock on wood... :exp:

yea i can vouch for that, all you hear is my kkm sucking in air when give it gas, they have such a nice sound, except i think i need to replace my water pump, about 2,500 - 3,000rpms it sounds a little sick...lol...damn waterpump, also 99,300....an going strong... :D

BTW Todd, one of the guys in the x club I'm in put a S/C on his Mountineer and it fits fine under the stock hood. He's on here some too, his nic is GTA357. There are a bunch of pics of it up on the sXc site. Other than wheels and tires it's pretty stealthy.

So when do the aftermarket parts come out for the SOHC? The 3.8 Stang motor has so many parts, so the 4.0 will also right? :D
