Which Tranny do I have?

As the title suggest I am trying to determine which tranny I have. I have an 2003 Explorer 4.0L XLS 4x4 with an automatic transmission.

The question is which model 5R5??

So far it is running fine at 100k, but I have noticed a delay when shifting between 2-3 slight, but percetible. It does not rev up when shifting from 2 to 3 which is what I think the flare is.

Recently I did change the fluid with Amsoil and replaced the filter. I used the flush method described in other threads.

Is there any other maintenance that can be done to help keep this running this well longer

Do these transmissions have bands tat require adjustment?

Hi Joe. This transmission has no dipstick unlike the older models. It's the 5R55W. You said that you replaced the fluid with Amsoil, and the filter. Did you use Mercon V ATF? The solenoid blocks start acting up after 60k miles. You have a small issue as of now, but if it gets worse, you would have to start by replacing the solenoid block, and valve body gaskets. This transmission has 2 adjustable bands just like the older models.

Thanks Brooklyn. I used the AMSOIL universal ATF. According to Amsoil it is Mercon V compatible. The no dipstick issue was a problem unitl I found and ordered the OTC fitting, other than that it was pretty easy.

Are the bands hard to adjust?

The bands are simple to adjust. Check my sticky thread on band adjustment in the transmission section. Glacier991 provided the step by step pictures. The Technician Corner forum has my other thread on band adjustment without pictures.

That is correct. GM also has some models without a dipstick. The manufacturers want you to believe that they are completely sealed (which isn't true), and that they never need maintenance for 100k miles (until you go to the dealer at that point which tells you that it's out of the waranty, and it's $3k-up for another one). Don't panic! Your 96 is the 4R55E with a dipstick.

So why does the same 4.0 SOHC engine in the 2002+ Sport Tracs have a 5R55E? Curious,

I was also curious why Ford never upgraded to the 5R55W on the 2002 Sport.

It's very odd, the bigger Explorer isn't that much bigger. Keeping up with what Ford changes to year after year is tiring. The single 2WD/4WD output shaft is a good change though.
