What tranny model do I have in my Explorer?
2005 Explorer, 4.0L V6, 4x4, no tow package.

I'm trying to figure out if I need to change my tranny fluid at 30k or not.

The dealer wants $300 for a 30k mile service. Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Matt

you have the 5R55W5 tranny

check out this:

http://www.explorerforum.com/ntrprize/spec2005.htm

because the 2002+ they don`t come with a stick you can change all the tranny fluid only with a special machine, but you can drop the pan and replace 1/3 of the fluid plus the filter.

you can flush the whole tranny fluid much cheaper in a shop and thats your best bid.

$300 is too high.

Your transmission uses Mercon V semi-synthetic, and it's not a cheap fluid. Some shops use Mercon III, and the Lubegard additive to provide the necessary friction modifiers. Keep in mind that your fluid will still be Mercon III which is not synthetic if you choose to add Lubegard. It is best to use Mercon V as this is what is supposed to be in there.

The tranny fluid change isn't even included in this 30k mile service as it only applies to the Torqshift and 4R100. It appears that the tranny fluid doesn't get changed until 150k.

From owner's manual:
❑ Change engine oil and replace oil filter.
❑ Inspect tires for wear and rotate.
❑ Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake
lines & hoses, and parking brake system.
❑ Inspect wheel ends for endplay and noise.
❑ Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.
❑ Inspect exhaust system and heat shields.
❑ Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension
and, if equipped, halfshafts, driveshaft and
U-joints.
❑ Replace engine air filter.
❑ Replace fuel filter (see page 47).
❑ Replace cabin air filter, if equipped.
❑ Change automatic transmission fluid on vehicles
equipped with the Torqshift and 4R100
transmissions. Replace the remote filter element
on the vehicles equipped with the Torqshift
transmission. Inspect automatic
transmission/transaxle fluid level on all other
vehicles, if equipped with dipstick. Consult your
dealer for your particular requirements.
❑ Replace climate-controlled seat filters if equipped
(Navigator, Expedition, and Aviator).
❑ Lubricate 4X2 ball joints and steering linkage if
equipped with zerk fittings.
❑ Inspect and lubricate 4X4 front axle shaft U-joints
(F250/350/450/550 and Excursion).
❑ Multi-point inspection (recommended)

So all this ******* is doing is expecting for potential issues and charging you 300 for it...tell him to suck your" insert your choice of word". Take it somewhere else.

I had my 2005 fluid changed for $112 at the dealership (flush job plus fluid). Thats all I had done though. I did all the other 30K stuff my self. The book does say 100k for the fluid. But I do a lot of in town driving and 100K on a fluid working that much scared me. I want this thing to last.

No way I'm waiting til 100k+ miles to do my tranny fluid either. I think I'll have it done at 60k and call it good.

I was quoted $619 for 30K on my 05 explorer V6 2WD. This included transmission flush, coolant flush, oil change, injector and throttle body cleaning, and a bunch of checking things. I think I will have the transmission and coolant done, but injector and throttle body seems early?

WAY EARLY. Coolant is way early too. That is long life coolant in there good for 5 years. Tranny is debateable but I feel more comfortable when I had mine done. Don;t have them do the injector cleaner, throttle body cleaning or the cooolant. Way too early.
