whining noise at idle , doesnt go away

I am sure this has been asked and answered a million times but I searched and couldn't find it.

Any way I have an 04 explorer limited 4x4 with the 4.6 V8,when ever the engine is running I hear a whining sound coming from the engine compartment and I cannot pin down where it is coming from- the sound does not go away when driving and happens wheither car is hot or cold


Any ideas?

I just solved a persistent whine on my '99 (obviously different than you're driving, but it is a Ford after all).

Check the:

(a) Power Steering Pump (Fords are notorious for whiney pumps)

(b) Pulley Tensioner

(c) Idler Pulley

Mine was either (b) or (c). I'll never know because I replaced them both at same time (not a bad idea anyhow). For a long time I thought it was (a).
