This started yesterday. I have a whirring high frequency ratcheting noise when I back off the gas at 45+mph. Is this an issue with the lock up feature on the torque converter, or ???

Mark that is the transfer case going out. Scores of threads here about it, and concise stickies in the transmission sub-forum. It will need a rebuild along with key upgrades.

Thanks. I will look into that. I have also been researching how the torque converter works, and wonder what the symptoms of the stator one way clutch going out is.

I would think you could do a stall test for that, not sure though.

Obviously I want to pin down the problem before spending $$$. So how would I test the transfer case?

Also make sure it's not just an exhaust shield banging around or loose.

Do all four of your tires match EXACTLY: brand, size, model, treadwear, and inflation?

You have to open the case for further diagnosis, although a fluid sample may offer clues.
