Hello all
This is my first post and since I have always gotten good info off this site I felt it was time to give something back to the forum. I have a 2008 X EB with 50,000 on it. My wife and I kept hearing this whistling noise coming from the engine, so we took it to 3 different ford dealerships only to get told 3 different reasons and excuses. I have bumper to bumper coverage (thank god) so money wasn't an issue. It wasn't until we took it to Koons of Sterling Va. that we found out that "FOUND CONVERTER COMING APART, SPREAD METAL THROUGHOUT, REPLACED UNIT PER ESP AUTHORIZATION, RETESTED ALL OK" In other words I got a new transmission and BAMN the noise has been gone for a week now. Only down fall is that it took them a month to do the work because the trans. was on back order, but still they gave me a 2012 rental at no cost and I'm happy as hell. Lastly it really ticked me off that the other Ford dealerships didn't take the time to find the problem and for that they will not see any of my Fords again. After all said and done the bill was like 4000 grand. I paid zippy 0 and the car runs like new.

I don't think my '00 is still covered......it has a whistling noise too :(

But congrats on getting it all fixed up!

Was that EB a 4.0 five speed or the 4.6 with the 6 speed?

Thanks all, and its a 4.0 6cyc. is all I know. I paid 1200 for the bumper to bumper almost passed on it but it has come through for me 10 fold. It paid for a new radiator, thermostat, transmission torque converter and countless other little things I cant remember right now. But I think that will be it for a while it runs like a new car. THANKS KOONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, the 4.0 with the 5R55 transmission. Sounds like you got one of the ones that had all the defective parts installed in it. ;)

Flag, do you know of a recall notice or TSB on this. I have a 2009 4.9 with 5 speed trans.

TSB 09-12-12 is the only one that I have seen that applies to the 06-09 explorer model years and is more for information repair purposes. However, that TSB does not have to do with the torque converter coming apart.

How can I tell if I have a 5R55S?

Look at the transmission code on the drivers side door.

There is only one sticker and it is a "Tire and Loading Data"
It has the VIN and this number at the bottom: 5U5A-1532-AA (TLU)
Is that it?

No, there is white label on the door itself that has all the vehicle manufacture data on it. It is about the same size as the tire loading data one. The letter you want is the one listed under "TR".

It has a V

That means that you have the 5R55S.
