White Face Gauges

Still haven't got the Mounty cluster fixed & re-installed. I hate not having anywhere to work on my Ex! :banghead:

I have to work on the Ex outside and the weather has been crappy every time I have a chance to work on it. Hopefully I can get it in before the winter arrives.

Stay tuned..................

From my earlier post:

I installed the cluster and it looked awesome!!:thumbsup: The indicator lights are all correct and working. The problem is that the LED display is dim and the mileage is incorrect. So I took it out and will put it back in after I fix the LED display using the same fix I did for my original cluster by following this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217490

Here are some pics I took with my cell phone of the cluster installed:

I will take some better pics with my camera and post more info when the LED display is fixed and the cluster gets re-installed.

I'm thinking about seeing if I can just fit the assembly that has the Mounty gauges on it to my existing cluster. That way I would have the white face gauges & the correct mileage. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about the dim LED display since I already fixed that on my original cluster.

Installation Complete!

As the title says, I finally got around to repairing & installing the Mounty Cluster. I got lucky when I scored this cluster because all the indicator lights are correct. I know that the Mounty was AWD and didn't have any 4x4 indicators on the dash. This must be one of the early clusters because I have all the correct lights!

I had some help along the way. This is the part when I thank those that helped.
Thanks to Joe Dirt & everyone else that helped me make the decision to go forward with this mod!
Thanks to rocket2ya for supplying the cluster. Great price & fast shipping. Good guy to do business with.
Thanks to XtremeRanger for this awesome write-up on removing the cluster: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218636
Thanks to Denny347 for instructions on repairing the issues with the LED readout. I used it for my original cluster and now the Mounty cluster: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217490

Some notes and questions: when I originally installed the cluster back in June of last year, I took it right back out because the LED display was very dim and the mileage was incorrect. I thought the mileage was stored in the PCM but was wrong. I figured that the mileage was stored in the LED display. The plan was to repair the dim LED display & use the original LED so my mileage would be correct.

I swapped out the LED display and the mileage is still incorrect. Also, The display in my Ex cluster does not shows 10ths of a mile. As you can see in the pic, the Mounty cluster shows the 10ths.

My question is: does anybody know where the mileage is stored? I think I have it narrowed down to the circuit board. If this is the case, I'm going to try using the circuit board from my original cluster.

Anybody have any thoughts on where the mileage is stored? I need to have the mileage correct because when I get inspected next year I will be flagged for tampering with the mileage. The new mileage is over 100,000 miles lower than the actual mileage.

Thanks for looking in. :D:thumbsup:

I gotta tell you that I really love having this installed. It only took me a year. :D Enough of the chit chat, let's get to the pics!

BUMP for your thoughts on mileage storage. :dunno:

I believe the mileage is stored on a chip on the IC. If you google Ford Mileage Correction you will find some details. Somewhere on IC is chip that may have these numbers or similar. This is the chip that contains the mileage info.

Ford Explorer - 68HC912DG128
Ford Explorer - 68HC912D60 - 2002 year
Ford Explorer - 68HC912B32 - 2002 year
Ford Explorer - 9S12H128
Ford Explorer - MC9S12DP256 - 2004-2005 year
Ford Explorer - 93c46 - 2005 year
Ford Explorer - 93c86 - 2005-2007 years
Mercury Mountaineer - 9s12H128

I'm very surprised that apparently mileage isn't stored on the PCM. Sure makes tampering easy if all it takes is swapping in an IC from a low miles wreck. I wonder if one of the Ebay sellers that lists lots of IC's for sale knows the answer?

The FSM does talk about some of the modules needing to be reprogramed with dealer equipment when changed. You might need to take it in to a Ford shop to get the miles corrected in the new IC. I dunno. You could PM swetrid and see if he will chime in here and tell what he knows.

Good luck!

Certainly unsettling. There is a European operation that will reprogram the mileage if you send them the IC. There are also lots of postings about software tools to reprogram certain chip sets like the ones I listed in the prior post.

I'm gonna check my old cluster circuit board when I get home and bounce it off those listed. I guess I'm going to call ford also. Thanks guys.

None of the numbers on the chips match those listed by icepickjazz. I think I'm going to check with the dealer to get some info before I try the Mounty cluster with my original circuit board. I will let you know how I make out.

Went to the dealer today and found out that they cannot program the correct miles into the cluster. They said when they get replacement clusters, they receive them already programmed with the correct mileage.

I am going to see if using the original circuit board does the trick. I will let you know how I make out.
