Going through my laundry list of things to fix, this is another that I've dealt with for the past 4 years, and am now annoyed enough to fix it.

I get a whizzing noise from what sounds like the drivers side of the engine in cold weather.

The noise gets louder as RPMS go up. When I shift into a new gear, the noise drops down and then rises again with RPMs. This ONLY happens when it is cold out (started noticing it again in the mornings going to work - temps in the 40s-50s. As I drive, it gets quieter and usually in 10 minutes it has stopped altogether. On colder mornings, it's louder.

I recorded it this morning, so you can hear for yourself. Again, this has been happening for 4 years, and hasn't really gotten worse, but I also don't want it to cause problems down the road for me. I'm thinking it's a gasket somewhere that contracts when it's cold and as it warms up, expands, but my automotive skills are limited to brakes, oil, and the occasional lift kit on a jeep.

Here's the link for the audio.

Checked it out again today - sound is definitely coming from the drivers side of the engine - it was loudest right by the front driver's side tire. It's going in to the shop on Thursday, but hoping I can do it myself before then.

Be sure to post back I would definitely like to know what it is.

Ford had a message to replace the transmission filter on 02 Explorers for whine noise below 40 degrees out. It would go away after a couple of minutes of operation.
