I just put my headers on this weekend and its definitely not what I expected as far as sound goes. It almost sounds like a lawn mower. Has anyone experienced the same sound??

Has everyone who has put on headers, have the same sound. I guess I was used to hearing headers on a chevy v-8 and so i figure that is the biggest difference.

I would appreciate anyone's input.

i haven't done it yet...but was wondering about any difference as far as acceleration goes?

I did notice some but nothing to say oh yes its gonna make your vehicle move. Now that the computer is settling a little, it seems to be a little more responsive but not as much when i put the K&N cone in .

It took alot longer than i thought too. I guess cause i had to run over to sears hardware a couple times cause the bolt kit that was provided didn't have nuts washers or anything.

Some of the bolts were metric and sears did have what i needed which was real good. And I did run a 8mm tap in the holes of problem manifold bolts that i could fit into with the tap.

So be prepared on how everything will go together and get it all planned so you dont have to run out for washers, nuts, etc... And when you take the pipe off from the cat, I reccommend using a 14mm if your 9/16' slips on the rusted away nuts. tap on with a hammer and they will come off pretty easy usually.

How much were you expecting out of a 6 cylinder?:D

Well i didn't know what to expect in any event, i just know that the motor will breath better with headers. I am not a big how much power a motor can get buff, i just know how to fix things and try to keep my truck runnig its best.

How much should you expect???

I was just saying that seeing your ex has 174000 miles.Nothing against you at all:D

so wait your exhaust coming out of the muffler sounds like a lawn mower? maybe i don't wanna do this after all

IMO unless the OHV is really built up headers aren't worth it unless your stock manifolds need replacing anyway.

Thats what I am trying to find out from others who have done them. It rides ok, but just sounds so different.

Nice updating on the sig:D I hope I get that many miles out of my ex:D

Well Phat *******, just noticed you put on Pacesetter headers. That's probably part of your problem. The only things I've heard about them is that they suck! They either don't fit, sound like crap, leak, or break. You get what you pay for, but good luck with them.

My question to you is: How large is your tailpipe, what muffler do you have, and do you still have the stock cats (ok, 3 questions)?

I was thinking about getting headers. Would I loose low end, if I put them on? I like my low end, & I would be really upset if I lost that, in favor of high RPM power. So which headers made for a 94 4X4 are better for low end?

Jason,
Unless your stock exhaust manifolds are leaking I wouldn't spend the money to change to headers. But, JBA or Borla would be your best bet.

Yeah I've been told that. They aren't leaking, but they are rusted.

what about headman headers?

I have the Borlas and they are nice, fit well and are stainless so no worries- my cat back has been on for 150k miles with no problems - the headers 20k with no problems.

The headers make the engine a bit noiser- you hear a bit more of the exhaust in the engine compartment- sort of tinny sounds as the exhaust gasses hit the tubes- all the headers I have ever had do it. One of the reasons I wrapped mine. As far as exhaust note I dont think it sounds like a lawn mower, it doesnt sound like a V-8 for sure, sixes have their own tune. The sounds you dont want are hisses, or ticks which indicate exhaust leaks. After your install make sure you go back and retorque the collector bolts, any slip flanges, and the flange bolts after the headers have had a few heating/cooling cycles.
One thing about headers is they add another layer of maintance checking for loose fasteners and such to avoid leaks.

Ill agree with Alec the headers really dont give you much if any power below 2200-2500 rpm. But I dont know about a loss in low end since I added the headers when I rebuilt and recammed my engine, but I have no complaints about power at any rpm range right now.

just to add to stevevb,,

I agree with everything he said, I also have the Borla's on my 92' Explorer. I added them to the 94' long block I built and droped in. However I have a "tick" under Torqe load conditoins, due to a small leak. I had a problem with a striped hole on my passengers side head, and had to tap it,, but still is not perfect, and this seems to be where the tick is coming from.

i have borla headers with a borla exhaust system it does too resemble a lawn mower but hey thats one badass lawn mower sound..

Alec, I had replaced the muffler with a Glasspak. The stock pipe size is on the vehicle now and they are stock cats. Is there a preferred cat replacement?? What kinda $$$$??

I don' think they sound like crap, just a little tinny, not used to it i guess. My computer has settled in for me and my response has gotten better across the board, esp when on open road its got alot more getup at high speeds too. I went past 85 on the speedo all the way to "D"(heh).

It was a project, but i would put them on again if i had the chance.

P.S. I didn't ahve any problems with anything lining up, all bolts went in rather nicely. Just the hardware was the biggest complaint. No nuts washers etc...

the lawnmower sound is probably due to the increased airflow through the glasspack. I suggest you get a real, high quality muffler.

Leave the stock cats if they're still flowing well.
