Higher octane fuel is only necessary if you have a computer that is programmed for it and/or you're running a supercharger or nitrous. If you always run higher than recommended gas in your motor you can harm it and other systems.

alec. i think you have a B&m shiftplus in your x. would it work on a 2003 4.0 SOHC?

You mean between the two types of gas? Higher octane gas will lower your performance and fuel mileage because the vehicle is not designed for it.

LOL, I have to buy high test gas for the Lexus, be happy you dont have to!
